Meet Spirit: Update

Disclaimers first...I am NOT, repeat NOT keeping this dog. So don't even go there, my dear friends. I'm just fostering him. And we have a good application on file who we are contacting as I speak. That said...

Meet Spirit...

He is HUGE! A good 7 inches taller than Piper who is a normal size girl. And he is the sweetest dog E V E R! He's 8 years old and was with his former owner since he was a pup. Her circumstances changed and now he is with HANR rescue.

He loves to have his belly rubbed...

And he has the longest tongue I ever saw in person. Couldn't get a good photo of it, but here's a head shot anyway...

Did I mention he was HUGE? His paw barely fits in my hand and my hands aren't small.

A Helping Hand...

Will tell you more of his story later. Right now we are about to get hit with a T-storm and he is afraid of them, so gonna try to help him through it.

Update: Storm is over. Well, that was't too bad. He was anxious, but not freaked out especially. It was a brief storm and we are supposed to get more tonight and tomorrow, so we'll see how he does.

This is his second full day at my house. I picked him up late Monday and at first glance, thought I may have made a mistake. Two of us couldn't hold him and he was extremely anxious. But got him home and he was fine on leash. I was worried I couldn't walk him by myself, but he's as good as gold and I can walk both dogs together with no problem. Anyway, I got about 2 hour of sleep that night because he was panting like a steam locomotive and it never let up. Very loud and noisy. He did that for about 11 hours straight through until 8:30 the Tuesday morn. I think he just finally got exhausted and went to sleep for a couple of hours. Poor guy. He misses his Mommy, but is just as loving as if he had been here forever.

Briefly, his owner gave him up because she has to move in with her mother in an apartment complex that doesn't allow pets. It's a longer story than that, but to make it concise, Spirit had been confined in the bathroom because he was chewing holes in the walls of her apartment. So basically, he was cut off from the attention he craves. And he is a MAJOR velcro dog. All he wants is to be near his people. He lived with other cats and dogs at one point and had a human sibling as well. Then things changed and he was suddenly an only child.

Piper and he get along just fine, although she keeps giving me that look that says, "Do we have to keep it?" hahahahaha. I think his anxiousness wears on her. But he is much better today and the vet gave me some Composure treats to help him calm down. He wouldn't eat his meals for two days here and I know that his owner was feeding him day old buns as well as Ol' Roy. He hasn't been interested in the TotW that is served in my doggie diner until this afternoon. I didn't give in to his whims, so now he's decided to eat. (Edited to add: I have been giving him treats for good behavior, so he wasn't literally being starved. LOL).

Well that's about it in a nutshell. He was loved at his former home, is loved here, and will be loved in his permanent home. His future looks bright.

Oh he is gorgeous! I can't imagine how his former owner must feel. So sad for them all but so happy Spirit is with you and on his way to a new chapter in his story.

He is GORGEOUS! I would just love to snuggle with that big ball of fur! We adopted our Dexter at the age of 9 and he had a similar experience to Spirit...his mommy loved him but had to give him up for many reasons...we were so lucky to have that boy in our lives for the 4 years he gave us...we miss him every single day...and at some point in the future we plan on having another senior in our house...lots of love to Spirit and you!!

DARN! Good thing he has a home lined up and I have another Newf lined up! His head is the splitting image of my first Newf's. I would take him in a heartbeat.

I have heard that before!!! Just kidding. Nice looking fellow. I know what you mean about the panting when we have kept our friends' Landseer Tigger. Just the car ride gets him let alone being dropped off here. But after the first 5 or 6 hours, he does settle in and is very much at home. Well hopefully when he gets settled in his new home, he will be the best Newf ever!. Have fun with the temp house guest. Tell Piper she is doing a Mitzvah to take in the unfortunate. Good luck and hopefully a short stay.

Believe me, if I was ever going to have another dog, this would be the one. But it's not going to happen for a myriad of reasons.

Piper says she want's to apply for martyrdom, or sainthood, or whatever. She doesn't care what faith as long as she is recognized for her suffering and good works. LOL.

I'm not so sure she doesn't deserve it either, since this isn't the first time she's had to take a back seat to another dog. That's one of the drawbacks of being the youngest of the bunch and/or having to live occasionally with needy foster dogs. I may just change her NN signature to reflect that status once she's gone to the big doggie playground.

Oh Ronnie. Spirit is the best dog ever. You would be mad about him! He was very good when the bigger storm hit later that evening. He was anxious at first and then calmed down quickly even though the thunder got louder. I think he was worried that he would be shut up in a room by himself. Not here. He is allowed to go where he wants, whenever he wants. Of course, he prefers to hang out with me, but is increasingly comfortable enough to feel like he doesn't have to follow me everywhere I go. And his heavy panting is markedly decreased. He still pants, but not in that anxious manner. I think his wall chewing and freaking out at storms was from being shut up alone. He's been as good as he can be here.

When I call him, he comes a-running right away. And he sits and downs on the first verbal command, too. He's just a gem to be around and easy to work with. I spent hours and hours grooming him and he seemed to love every minute of it. Even toenail clipping!!! He doesn't even counter surf. If I didn't have his papers, I would wonder if he was a Newf - LOL!!! Except that his temperament is 100% Newf. What a big, sweet lug. And his appetite is good now. That TotW food isn't so bad after all...hahahaha.

I am sorry he will have to go through another adjustment again, but I have no doubt he will recover as soon as he realizes that he's loved and part of the family, and isn't going to be pushed away. I will miss him, though.

All that's left to do, as far as his new home goes, it a home check. But we are having trouble finding someone in that area to do one. It's in northern Iowa and I guess we don't have any members that are close or available. Just a matter of time, but I sure want to see him settled in his new home soon. We are getting too attached to one another, and I think Piper is getting more used to him being here. She was so depressed when Hugo died that she lost a significant amount of weight from refusing to eat. With Spirit here, her appetite has increased as well. So I hope Spirit's leaving won't throw her back into a depression. Will have to wait and see.

He will end up just like my Monty... When it is perfectly right. In the meantime he probably doesn't realize he is in the home of the wisest most perfect lady EVER..

What a magnificent boy with a perfect name and the perfect foster home. I'd be in line to try to adopt him too. Whoever gets him will be a very lucky family.

Meet Spirit: Update

Well, surprise, surprise! The potential home didn't work out. Spirit will be extending his stay with me. And he is a welcome member of my home for as long as necessary.

Leonard...I'm not ready to eat crow, just yet. hahahaha. The Fates will decide what Spirit's next adventure will be.

Now my mother believes in fate and will drive the over all out come. :)

My basset owning friend had to be the die hard of NOT being a foster failure...till last May. But it was extraordinary circumstances because of the medical issues of the foster she had over a year and a falling out with the rescue group. She was so afraid without the proper care, the dog would be dead, so she bit the bullet and officially quit the group. BTW, he is probably has the best house manners of all "5 Pesky Little Varmints" in the house.
