That's wonderful! Yes they love to mark, to announce their presence, to hit high on the totem pole and declare that they're well fed and hydrated, loved, making a stir, striding about, towing their human parental entities, inviting their buddies to check out their messages and respond, one up each other with enticing scents, blow their message on the wind to twitching noses everywhere.

well, Cindy you should read through several of my last posts where I'm enjoying my dog. a couple of videos, even. yup sometimes I actually like him, if you can believe it.
Stacey, here's the deal. I'm not going to spend my day here seaching your posts, and I'm not going to read any more of the vitriolic private messages you are sending me. So, you might as well stop. As I told you, we are not obligated to like one another's posts, it's one of the things about public boards. If you don't like what I said, move on, select a reply that tells you what you want to hear, and get over it. But cut with the nasty pm's and we should be able to get along just fine. I took the time to reply and tell you that I'm not interested in fighting with you, so take that at face value.

Leska, you have an amazing ability to capture the "essence" of a dog's spirit in your posts. I love it.

oh cindy, go screw. rude is rude. and that's what you were. and, unlike you, i was private messaging you because I felt it was the right thing to do to discuss why I was offended with your post privately, rather than here, in front of our fellow Newf owners. But apparently that's lost on you. anyone else feel sorry for my poor, poor hemingway who must have a horrible life?

Thanks Cindy! So many ppl have said I'm a dog, LOL Happens when you love dogs. And to think my natural human self HATES pee, stinky sticky icky yucky disgusting stuff. Especially cat pee. But now I deal with it constantly and hardly even notice it. Becoming barn-ized. But having so much fun! and being loved like there's no tomorrow.

See, humanimals piss match too, just a little higher on the intelligence ladder, supposedly. Me, I prefer swaying grass, trees, clouds, birdsong, love, joy, sharing info, and roaming thru Nature humming to my sweet adventurous boy and having him sing back his love to me.

About neutering -- read so many accounts that it did not stop marking or other macho behaviors, or humping etc. And I'm so afraid of any ortho issues, not going to take the chance. Orka can have his orchids. His behavior is improving with age and training.

I'm influenced by all the years I had my Samoyed boy whom I loved slowly become crippled by arthritis. Oh how I treasure Orka's ease of movement and exuberance to run and gallop trot lope climb scamper play.

So true Leska!! When you allow yourself to be in tune with them, there is so much enjoyment, even when they are performing antics. I have an eleven month old girl right now who is never happier than when she thinks she has forbidden fruit...so I placed an antler out in the yard and watched her find it, and sneak it into the house, through the house, and out the other pet door to the area she spends her nights. She thinks she fooled me, and that she's being "sneaky". It's way too cute.

Here Leska...I love this quote, I think you will too:

"In a world older and more complete than ours they move finished and complete, gifted with extensions of the senses we have lost or never attained, living by voices we shall never hear. They are not brethren, they are not underlings; they are other nations, caught with ourselves in the net of life and time, fellow prisoners of the splendour and travail of the earth." Henry Beston

My son loved to hold himself when he was a toddler....it made him ...happy...he smiled and would hold himself drink his milk and fall sleep....he was sooooo happy...i love loved to see him happy
My baby girl like to take her pamper off...run around squat and pee...she would smile and it made her happy not to have to use the potty chair
Like all moms I really want them to be happy...it make me happy to see them happy
I'm in a group for moms of kids with special needs...some very severe some mild but the first thing they taught me is to never accept I'll mannered or in appropriate behavior from your child because......
However...there are rules..society rules to abide by..inappropriate actions are never funny....finding pleasure in watching it is equally inappropriate

Being nonchalant about inappropriate public actions are the reasons there aren't many more dog friendly places

Stacey ask this same question a little while back so to ask it a second time...it must be something your really concerned about so I'm sending you and Hemi loads of positive energy. Keep doing what you need...this too Shall pass

Disagreements are ok...as long as we don't hold on to,it.......group hug

....and I'm NOT fluffy! Lol

Calvin and Hobbes are 25 months and don't lift their legs yet what does that mean?????
Some dogs are not as prone to hormonal behaviour, and it takes them longer to decide to do it. Often, it will be "triggered" by a female scent that is interesting, and they will start. I've had them "try" as early as 4 months of age, tho it's somewhat clumsy and more of a squat with one leg sticking out at that age. I wouldn't be worried about it anyway...if their normal is not cocking to pee, that's their normal :)

Cindy, what about a Newf babe that is humping another dog when he's just 14 weeks old? I have a very hormonally crazed boy. Have you seen humping at such an early age? It was very slo mo and languid, didn't gain energy until much later.

Stacey, remember, if you listen to everybody else, they're not dogs but bears :roflmao:

Cindy I want a video of your antler sneak, too funny, and love the quote!

Yes....actually, that's not unusual at all, and isn't always sexual. Sometimes it is positional....very very young pups will do that while still "in the nest" if they happen to be draped across another pup. It's one of those things...pups, long before they are hormonally active, will initiate play that mimics sexual behaviour. So it's one of those places that we have to remember that their social structure/acceptable practices/ behaviour does not correlate with ours. It's like them washing themselves. While that behaviour would be um...extremely alarming..in a human, dogs don't have our "values" and therefore we can't impose our standards across the board to them. And yes, I have ALWAYS loved that quote Leska. But your post today made me remember it.

Nothing!! Elvis took FOREVER to lift his leg. We thought he would never do it. He's 4 now and most of the time still just squats if he's in the middle of the yard and doesn't have anything to lift against. I thought it was because he wasn't around other male dogs to "show him how it's done", but I think he just didn't care. He's VERY clumsy when he does it and always has to put his toes back on the ground to steady himself. I was shocked at Leska's video that a newf can lift a leg that high and still stay still and steady!! He also has terrible, terrible aim and never hits anything he thinks he is. I don't think he knows how big and long he is, because he will sniff something then go to mark it, but will be so off we can't help but laugh.

Isn't it funny how different these guys are? Some are worried they mark too much, and then there's people like us who worry that they never mark!! I think they have their own forum and plan stuff like this just to freak us all out. :icon_stupid:

Stud dogs that have been used seem to get it down to a fine art..you could paint a bullseye on a tree and they would hit the dot!!! Especially if another male is watching them. I especially laugh at the "dirt kick" they do after.
