male newf advice

We are adding a male (neutered) to our home that has two females (spayed). Somehow in the past 30 years of owning a bunch of dogs, we have never had a male. Anything I should know? All are adults.

We had two spayed adult females when we brought Zeus home this summer. He had just turned 4 yrs and was intact. I was prepared for all sorts of problems and there were NONE! Everyone got along very well after the initial adjustment time of about one week. During that time there was a lot of sniffing going on but no humping or similar behavior. Shortly after he arrived he was neutered and now nearly six months later they are all so mellow and easy that each one is just a pleasure. Unless you have some other particular known issues, my experience tells me you have nothing to worry about. Relax, enjoy and congratulations!

I don't really have much experience here because mine are so young. I have one spayed female that is 21 months (Lola) one unspayed female that is 1 yr old (Sophie) and Ty (8 months) and unaltered, but I also have two male neutered dachshunds and two spayed female dachshunds and a spayed female Carolina Dog...Total 3 boys and 5 girls. They all get along wonderfully! No issues, no fights, no nothing. They are fantastic.
We had one issue one time, but it was entirely my fault. It was a food thing and I bumped Lola when Kitty walked by and tried to steal her food. It set them off, but it was no big deal. No fighting, just some grunts and growls.
In the case of mine, which are still very young. My male is so calm. He is the calmest dog I have ever met. The girls can get a little overexcited at times LOL

I am partial to male dogs. My boys are both neutered- they get along wonderfully. Never had an issue. I find male dogs have very sweet dispositions. I've had two female dogs in the past (various breeds) and both could be "testy" at times. My Newf does, however, insist on peeing on every bush, tree or mailbox in a 3 mile radius . ;) I think once your crew settles in after the first few weeks all will be just fine. Good luck!

3 males here, no problems; the 2 newfs constantly play together; the border collie observes, he is a more independant type, he growls alot at Tiki, but always leaves the room when Tiki comes into his space; the border collie has laid clam to our bed, & the newfs respect that!

In my experience, males are the snuggliest and cuddliest of all. Enjoy!
Yeah....what Ginny said. We've had at one time three males (two neutered, one intact) and one spayed female. Everyone got along just fine.

Congratulations and enjoy!!!

Daisy is spayed and 8 1/2 yrs. Indy is spayed and 1 1/2 years. Snoopy is neutered and 15 months old. Cosmo is intact and is only 12 weeks old. We haven't had any major problems, but it might be because ours are still young. Congratulations on the new addition. Please share lots of pictures! :D

Thanks for all the great advice, I didn't know if males do or act any differently, i.e. peeing on every tree in the vicinity. Pictures in two weeks!

I have two spayed females and two neutered males. My youngest female can be a little snotty at times but that's her personality -sigh-
I have never had a male issue here.
We had a house guest who was an intact male and he tried to posture with Syd. Syd put him in his place real quick. That was the one and only time we ever saw an issue.
The males are more affectionate here too. The girls are loving, yes but the boys are the cuddle bugs

My males haven't figured out how to hike their legs and pee on trees! :shocker:

I had two male Newfs, added one of them to the "pack" of a spayed female and a neutered male when they were 4 and he was 6.5. No problems whatsoever. There was one incident of grumbling the day we brought him home when he pranced up to me, my boy Bava who'd been there since he was 13 weeks old took exception to this new guy coming up to his mamma ;) After that, no problems at all.

My dogs must all be backwards :) My girls are so affectionate.
They must be snuggling in our laps when we watch Tv and they sleep next to us or half on top of us in bed.
Ty sleeps in the chair next to us when we watch Tv and at the foot of the bed when we go to sleep. This might be an age thing though. As all of mine got older they got snugglier. Ty is only 8 months old.
Also he doesn't mark anything when we walk downtown, but Lola does...go figure..

Orka is a one year old male, intact, total lovebug honeybear indoors. He likes to pee on absolutely everything outside, and is obsessed with tall grasses. Any kind of tall grass and he just dives in, sniffing sniffing sniffing then peeing with gusto.

He lifts his leg high to pee, then kicks the ground with his hind legs and looks very proud of himself, poses like a macho trophy, snorts and gallumphs to the next target.

Have two enormous snuggle bears here also. They, too, must pee on everything - "leaving pee-mail" for the other neighborhood dogs, we call it. And they both do the 'pee, scraping kick, pose like stallions, and then trot off to the next bush' thing. Have had ZERO issues between the two boys - they established their own hierarchy and they obey it. Which sometimes means that if I want both boys to have a chewy long-term treat, I have to separate them, because Pooka is ALPHA and will hoard everything. They don't fight, at all, but Pooka will march over and steal anything that Nanook has, which leaves Nanook without.
