Atticus has developed a taste for tomatos. He's been rampaging around in my veggie garden (you should see it. It looks like he rolled in it. smashed flat), and I caught him red handed with a smashed green tomato hidden in his mouth. I see that tomato plants made the poisonous plants list. Has anyone had any experience with this? He looks fine, and judging from the professional sneaking, he's been snitching little tomatos for a while.

I see that I still haven't puppy proofed enough. Is there no end?

That is so funny , i had a yellow lab , named Hobbes , who used to got to the garden and pick tomatoes, but only the ripe ones , and eat em.We used to get so tickled at him , he ever so gentle slowly pick them off one by one. leaving only the green ones

Oh yeah ... raiding the tomato plants is a big hit in our yard too. What kills me is that while Hudson LOVES them, Rita doesn't but she still loves to pick them.

Ours picked all the tomatoes off our vines too! And, in the house if we have some tomato pieces after slicing one, we'll pass them out.

We've never had a problem with them, of course, nobody is eating a ton of them at a time, either.

I think it's the leaves that are toxic...I think they have nicotinic acid in them...related to tobacco plants...which can be quite deadly..I've never had any animals suffer from eating the tomato yet though

I use to have a Pom who would venture out to the garden and get a cherry tomato bring it back to the porch and eat it. Then he would go get another. He didn't bother the big ones, just the cherry tomatos

It is the leaves , hey on Opray show yesterday i say a dr. saying that tomatoes are a great food to fight cancer , so it should do our newfs good, said it didnt matter whether it was canned or fresh ones .

Maybe Heinz should hire out our Newfs to pick the tomatoes for ketchup!!
Unfortunatly..the profits may not be so good!!! ;)

My Wicca used to love to munch on tomatoes too - only she'd just take a bite out of every tomato on the plant, being careful to leave them on the vines though!
"I never touched 'em mom...."
Zoe also has a fondness for tomatoes, and stole one from the fridge the other night while Jim had his back turned!!!! She ran around the house with it in her mouth going "wooooo woooo woooo" while the juice poured out all over her!

What funny stories. I think it's great how our Newfies love their veggies. Too bad about the fact they have no clue as to how much effort your beautiful gardens take - they see them as salad buffets! :D

I used to have a collie who liked fresh corn...she would pick it off the stalk (not very neatly), shuck it and gnaw it off the cob...only the best sweetest corn of course...she would also pick the grapes off the vine and eat them...I know, grapes are bad for dogs...this was a long time ago and we didn't know any better...and she had no ill effects. I guess she just had a sweet tooth.

One time Clifford snatched a morell mushroom from a stand at the farmer's market when my back was turned.
At $15/pound it was an awfully expensive dog treat.
