Little Brag ...

Today was TEST DAY. At 6:00am, Nami & I began his SAR Stage 4 testing. Planning complete, equipment cross checked, comm plan in place and we were off. Stage 4 is an Area Search and a Trailing program where he has to locate a stationary subject in a wilderness setting, return to his handler (your's truly), and then take us to the find. The Trailing bit is to follow an 'aged' trail while I document it.

When we got there, the evaluator told us we would go through all the testing stations first so we would be out of the way of the 'real candidates'. It seems that I had found another 'Only GSDs can make SAR Dogs' chuckle-head.
Fortunately, there were 3 evaluators and the other 2 weren't so obnoxious about it.

Apparently, Nami must have heard this cuz by 6:30am we had scored a perfect score on the skills and obedience segment (inspite of some very questionable commands from the evaluator) and were headed for the woods.
I know we need pictures so I tried but only got one of his very well groomed hind end (Jeannie would be proud) disappearing into the bushes. (I've gotta get some help on cameras, low light, and moving dogs from GAD.)

Nami had 90 minutes to accomplish this test. 50 minutes into the timelimit, he alerted, returned and took us to a very surprised volunteer. Seems that nobody told him there was a Newf in the bunch!
When Nami popped out of the bushes (behind the poor guy), he caught one look out the corner of his eye and thought BEAR!. Fortunately, Nami's harness and orange t-shirt stopped any serious heart and bowel problems. (Thanks for the great idea Christine!)

The aged trail was over in 15 minutes once Nami cut the trail. We came out the other end to the applause of the other handlers. Tsunami is now a 'provisional qualified' SAR Dog/XO (non-operational). I am so proud of the big lug!

We both have a BUNCH of work to do for the very difficult Operational Readiness Evaluation. I go to NJ without Nami for training program in October and we both have an intensive program in November.

One more Stage to go!!!

(Ok, Ok ... so it's a BIG Brag ...) Thanks to everyone out here for their support and suggestions.

I like Nancy's idea of a Nami Cam.

Frank I am proud of the grooming. He had to look his best and I am sure he did. I still want to see the butt shot into the bushes.

Are you sure there was no serious heart and bowel problems? Did you actually check?? :D

Well Nami I hope Dad gives you an extra big treat tonight. You did the Newfoundland community proud!! Way to go!!!!

this is a BIG brag, bigger than any other win out there, IMHO
to overcome the breed snobbery, and the obvious idiocy to try to make you fail, you stood tall and overcame. good for you!
now come up north and help us set the "good ole boy" mentality straight LOL
good for you!
Give nami a big hug from us.

WAHOO!!!! GREAT BIG CONGRATULATIONS! Way to go, and to make such 'short time' of it in the process! What a smart boy ya got there, and isn't is awesome when all the training and hard work shine in the test. :D Good boy Nami!

Good luck on the final phase. Keep focused and let us know how your doing along the way.

Are you wanting to work locally, or planning on bigger things once your training is finished, and the two of you are certified?

Frank!!! What can I say??? I am so incredibly impressed. Congratulations to you and nami. I am so glad you showed those evaluators what you and Nami could do. This is an incredible accomplishment. Just so we all understand how much work and commitment this took from you and Nami, please tell us how many days a week and hours/week you work with him and how often you formally practice with the SAR group? I'd also like ot know how many weekends away etc... it has taken you to get this far. From the little bit of research I have done on SAR work, I know that what you accomplished today is a HUGE brag.

Congrats to a great new SAR team. mj

SAR is almost another full time job
Right frank?
ROTFL!!
Edited to add,
Emmett has a huge binder folder full of training papers,
we wrote down each practice, in detail, wind direction, time of day, temperature and drew a map, wrote down how he worked the problem etc.. etc..
trained twice a week drive was three or more hours one way, trained during the week twice. in between the two unit trainings each week.
i will treasure those papers and maps always, morgan has a binder half that size as we didnt get as far with her.
i am sure that nami has a lot of stuff and hours in that would be comparable to a 40 hour work week.
great dedication, much time, and expense, and tonns of love.

That is awesome. I think it is very small minded of people to be so judgmental!! GSDs are wonderful, but so are Newfies. The larger issue is the "life saving"! You would think these evaluators would WANT to encourage ALL canines working to save lives. Hooray for Nami - he ruled (and Ha Ha Ha!
)!
