Thanks everybody ... It sure has been a roller coaster and we're not done yet ... It was moments like Saturday that seem to make some of the noise not so bad ... Even if we complete the full ORE, there's no requirement for the team to take us - it just makes it a lot harder to argue with us ... As Christine indicated, there is a lot a breed prejudice in many of the teams but we're gaining a lot of traction.
MJ - Good questions and ones that need to be looked at before trying this. Nami started his program at 4 months old although most of the drills and exercises are geared for 9 months or older ... I figured a Newf was at least 5 months smarter than a GSD anyway ...
It is basically another full time job, only with strange hours. The training syllabus is drills at home 4 mornings a week, ad hoc sessions 2 nights a week during the week, and a problem/scenario almost every weekend (both 1 and 2 day variety.) In addition, as I mentioned above, meetings, seminars, and special training sessions at one of the sites for both of us (or just me.) It seems that the more you qualify through the stages, the more the demands on time are, with each successive stage becoming much more difficult. Combine that with my 'other' job and it becomes something not for the faint of heart. Since I am a volunteer, I will easily spend a couple of thousand dollars in expenses on this program before I am done.
The commitment is huge and the cost is high until you see the face on the lost child sitting under the bush when you show up ...
