Shadoe had a regular dinner last eve...this am he start to really whin and hit his crate door....immediately took him out and he pooped..the first poopmwas like soft serve ice cream. Then it was all liquid. I though maybe I had given him too much salmon oil....so I put some pumpkin in his breakfast and took him out twice this after just to check stool..better than this am but all was like soft serve. Gave him his dinner w / pumpkin...went to the store was gone about a hour and he had liquid diarrhea IN his crate! He has never pooped in his crate..and never poops so soon after eating. He seemed quite upset because he must have stood up the entire time because there was not a drop on him...he had backed up towards the rear of his crate..took him out and he ran to his spot and this time the liquid poop had blood and the end...now I'm a nervous wreck. His routine hasn't changed
No food change
He is on leash when outside because it too hot to let him play
He won't drink dirty water..if its not fresh he won't drink so I know he didn't drink dirty water.
Other dogs are fine
Otherwise he is acting the same, but drinking lots of water...I though it was just because it's hot out.
Will be headed to vet in am but I won't be able to sleep because this will weigh on my mind all night til tomorrow...any ides what could have happened...not been around any other dogs but my own

Do you have an emergency vet near you? The blood part is what makes me nervous. Maybe you could call an ER vet and get their recommendation based on what you know?

If it was just runny poop I would suggest pepto bismol as it always works wonders with my dogs. But, since he does have blood in his poop you really need to get it checked ASAP. He could have eaten something in the yard that would be causing it. I would call an emergency vet also. Good thoughts for you and your pup.

Blood in the poop that fast reminds me of parvo. I had a pit puppy that came down with parvo at 4 months fully vaccinated and never left the house (vet said we brought it in on our shoes).

Best course of action is to get the pup to the vet asap and get a parvo test. I think there are two things that cause blood in the poop, parvo and giardia I think.

Our puppy had bad diarrhea for a week but no blood. I had her on chicken and rice for a few days but whenever I started her on her normal food (percise holistic complete) she had the runs so I grabbed a bag of Welness Simple and immediately after that meal she was better.

But the blood makes me worry. Please keep us updated. My vet said there was a huge increase in parvo puppies he's seen this year possibly due to the warmer winter.

If your pup does wind up having parvo, opt for the in hospital stay day/night on fluids.

Good luck!

i was going to say be sure they test for giardia...they often don't do the snap test for it and a simple microscopic exam won't show it. could definitely be giardia. Good luck.

We battled this when we brought Zeus home at 8 weeks. He had very watery bloody diarrhea up to 3 times an hour. He initially tested positive for hookworms and then 2 days later coccidia. He continued with symptoms for 5 days even on medication. We ended up treating him after we had a diagnosis with Imodium and the antibiotics and anti parasitic meds. Good luck and I would definitely take to er vet. He may end up needing fluids either Iv or sub q.

Also mention to your vet about haemorraghic gastro enteritis.

The symptoms sound right and if it is this quick treatment is essential as it can be fatal

Please keep us posted! I went through something just like this a few months ago with my Emma. Came home from work and there was liquid diarrhea EVERYWHERE! Took 3 hours to clean up. The blood was due to all of the straining and she actually had a bit of a prolapse around her rectum, too.

The vet put her Metro and I started her on a mixture of 50/50 boiled and rinsed lean turkey with pumpkin. We also ran a test for giardia and that came back positive.

Oh yuck. Bring a sample to the vet if you can. Agree with the others on thorough parasite checks.

Zuzu came home with a few worms and giardia. The giardia took 2 courses to get rid of...and miraculously neither Cooper nor anyone in the house got it from her. Cleaning/sanitizing after poops was important in this, as well as hand washing after touching the dog, and no licking the face (I know you have kids so...lol!).

Let us know what the vet says!

Also, I'd probably stop feeding him for a meal at least to see if you can slow it down...if it is a tummy bug, his tummy will need time to settle and be empty. Water/ice chips are fine and he should stay hydrated.

GOOD NEWS.....after a battery if test the vet found nothing wrong. He also had an X-ray and the giardia test sent out.
He woke about 4am with diarrhea but no blood...vet had emergency surgery but we waited to see her.
I didn't want to feed him this am but he cried soooo bad o made him a cup of plain rice...seemed to settle him alot. Gave him another cup at 1 because reg vet wasn't available ....seem to help him relax even more....after the second cup no more diarrhea but we went to vet just to make sure.
NOW I'm really confused how it just seemed to pop then go away...vet suggested bland diet of rice and chicken for a day or two then slowly reintroduce regular diet.
I'm thinking he may have been fed more than one chicken nugget behind my back...could that cause such bad diarrhea?
Heals had a rectal to check for swelling and tears but none were found.
Thanks for all the suggestions...I went in suggesting test like I knew what I was talking about...vet said you really did your homework....I didn't tell her a army of folks who know sh** had my back! Thanks all!

Yay! good news. My vet suggested that the new bag of percise holistic I opened may be contaminated. So the word was to use bland and then re-introduce a new bag. It didn't work but did you open a new bag of food recently? Maybe a contaminated bag?

Well, for what it's worth, sockeye salmon pills give my husband diarrhea. ( Don't anyone tell him he was mentioned on NN.)

So glad he's doing better and that the tests came back great. Our River had a bad bout of diarrhea for a few days (a few weeks ago). I did give her pepto and the pumpkin with boiled rice/chkicken too, it cleared up pretty quick for us.
The worst part was she kept going to the same spot even after she was recovered, on and off for a week! and this was on my hard wood floors where I wouldn't think the smell would linger. I did the vinegar/water spray, followed by baking soda, followed by peroxide with a little soap. I'm happy to report she stopped going in the house after a few days of that. Sorry for getting side-tracked but diarrhea can lead to these things happening.
Here's hoping for a full-recovering for your boy asap!

Yes I did just open a new bag of food...just as I was reading this my dd said the same thing so maybe there is something to that.....when he's ready to go back on reg diet I'll get a new bag of food

so glad it's nothing serious, I hope it clears up soon. Talk to the owners of the store where you buy your food and ask if they can do any sort of a refund, most companies will take back product that's potentially spoiled without too many questions. Also ask them to help you pick out a bag from another lot so you can avoid any more potential contaminants. I hope things 'firm' up shortly!
