Kongs-Not Newf Recommended?

I purchased two black extreme XXL Kongs for my boys' stockings for Christmas. Inside was a pamphlet showcasing their other products but on the flip side was a list of dog breeds and the recommended Kong size. Does anyone have an idea why Saint Bernards, Mastiffs and Pit Bulls had an asterix noting that Kongs were not recommended for these breeds? Newfoundlands did not make the list of breeds but if Kongs are not recommended for Saints then perhaps they are not ideal for Newfs either.

That's strange, I thought the xxl ones were specifically for giant dogs/heavy chewers. Hamish has had kongs his whole life and never had problems.

We've got them here too, and no problems. I ALWAYS check to make sure the little hole in the bottom is clear of obstructions, though, before using - evidently when they get going with the tongue they can get their tongues stuck inside things like the kong if a vacuum forms.

Norm (Saint) EATS Kongs, he somehow crumbles the rubber - my friend's Rottie does the same thing. My Newfs have all been fine with the regular Kong, but Norm can't be trusted with the industrial Kong for heavy chewers.

My Mila has no problem destroying the red and the black Kongs but she will not ruin any of her stuffies. I guess it just depends on the dog and their personal chewing habits.

According to this pamphlet, Kongs, even the black XXL, are also not recommended for Great Danes.

Nessa, I remember there was a dog's toy, a ball I think, that was recalled because of the very "vacuum" effect you mentioned as it only had one hole and a dog's tongue was getting sucked in and caught.

Sulley seems fine with his black Kong, although he only has interest when it has something in it. Although Saints and Newfs have a lot in common, they are still totally separate breeds with different traits and habits. Perhaps Norm is the average Saint when it comes to chewing, and they have a knack for breaking these things up which is why they are listed (that is a guess, I have no idea if it is true). I would watch your pups with the new toy and inspect it regularly to see if they are working little bits off or if it is starting to crack or crumble. I give Sulley's a good look over every time i fill it up for him.

Clifford is fine with the kongs. He prefers the small ones, while my Jack Russell can catch and carry around the XXL one someone bought for Clifford.

mine are fine with red and black kongs....although not that interested unless its stuffed full of goodies! :)
Likewise with Snuffles. He has a red one that I keep in the freezer with peanut butter over the big whole. He gets it when we leave the house for a extended time. He licks the peanut butter out, then sleeps till our return. I have put some of his favorite treats in it for stimulus play, but if they do not come out easy, Snuffles looses interest very fast.

I can't give mine stuffed Kongs unless they are crated because Bella will finish hers then go bully everyone into giving theirs up, and if they resist, she starts a fight. I bought the Kong Wobbler recently though and it's awesome. I fill it with kibble or little treats or sometimes Goldfish or Cheerios. Bella does all the work and the others stand around waiting for some to fly their way.

Every night, Buckley has a black kong stuffed with biscuit and peanut butter. No problems, but they do wear out. We replace it when the edges of the large opening start to deteriorate, maybe three times a year.

Besides a piece of pizza crust on Friday nights, this treat is probably his favorite and it's quite entertaining to watch him work to make sure no morsel escapes his tongue! Plus, the sounds!

My Newfs are fine with kongs, but the Labs are another story. The littlest Lab will make short work of the red or green ones, but the blacks do seem to slow her down.
