Intolarent to chicken & fish

Sorry I have not been on for a while, but we only had intermittent internet. Been going crazy trying to research dog food with limited ingredients while constantly loosing my connection.
So far we found out that Bär has an intolerance to Chicken & fish, with fish being the worst offender.
That rules out all but one of the Champion foods.
Acana Lamb & Apple, which contains no chicken, no fish actually gives him solid poops, but he poops about 4-5 times a day. It does not matter if I give him 2 cups a day or 4 cups a day. I would really like your opinion on this one, because I don't think he should be pooping that many times a day even if it is solid.
On advice from the vet he is on 3 small meals a day to ease digestion. He also gets probiotics & enzymes.
All other supplements are stopped for the time being.
Sunday, 28 Feb I started adding Fromm Duck & sweet potato to the Acana & he went from 4-5 poops a day to 2-3 poops a day, but with the morning poop being formed soft near the end.
Any advice as to where to go from here would be greatly appreciated. Also ideas of any other good kibble that does not contain fish or chicken would be great.

Try a venison based food. Taste of the Wild makes a venison and bison variety and Nutro makes a venison type for sensitive stomachs. Maybe Acana does not agree with him, so switching brands might help.

California Natural Lamb and Rice is a simple one protein food that might do the trick.

Make sure you check the labels carefully. TOTW has chicken in everything (in some form) except for their fish variety. (We looked because my son's dog is also allergic to chicken).

Dick Van Patten's Natural Balance has a line of limited ingredients dog foods. I haven't looked at the ingredient list to see what they have in them, but here ya go:

Poor guy. Hope you find the right food soon. Cooper couldn't take the grain free foods at all, but is doing well on Eagle Pack (Holistic Select Duck and Oatmeal - it does have chicken fat in it, though).

Good luck.

I like the ingredients in the Natural Balance. I am feeding the fish and sweet potato. I was using TOTW but switched off because of the chicken fat in the ingredients. But I do know of other dogs that are doing very well on it, which is why I suggested it above.

Nature's Variety Venison is chicken/fish free. It would be a nice compliment to Fromm Duck.

Thank you all for the great ideas to help my baby.
Taste of the wild is out because it has chicken meal as the 4 ingredient.
Natural Balance I had looked at before but because they list the potato before the meat I did not think it was that good. I took a good look at it again & decided to give the potato & venison a try.
My head is just spinning from all the reading i been doing.
Our vet wants to avoid to medicate him for the rest of his life & so do we.
If kibble does not work at all, the next step will home cooking & then raw.
So first thing tomorrow morning, I will be on the phone to see who in a 50 km radius sells Natural balance potato & venison.
I have also been documenting everything that goes in & comes out of this little trouble maker. Could make some interesting reading someday, but I am slowly running out of terms on how to describe poop consistences.

:shocker:I think we need a poop-encyclopaedia with pictures.
Have not picked up the Natural Balance yet, but did more research on the company. Although I like that it is a limited diet, I now have a concern.
I am reading that DVP foods are made by Diamond. Anybody know if that is true or not?
I am also reading that DVP has had some recalls.
For those of you who feed DVP Natural Balance foods, have you had any problems with it?
I am still thinking of giving it a try, but somewhat nervous about it. I researched so many brands lately, but 99% of what is on the market has chicken or fish in one form or another in it.
Bär started out on Kirkland puppy but after a couple of months there was a problem. I stopped feeding it right away & started cooking for him. Afraid to trust kibble again, did not want to repeat the 2007 disaster.
Then I came across Orijen, Bär was just over a 1 old.
He has been eating Orijen ever since always topped with some good home cooking in case I had to back to home cooking. He always did well on this until the giardia hit him.
Right now I am mixing 1/2 Acana Lamb & Apple & 1/2 Fromm Duck & Sweet Potato [it has chicken cartilage, which i think might account for the soft formed].
Yesterday I started topping with cooked sweet potato for one meal & white potato the next meal. We are down to 2 poops a day with this, they solid to start but soft formed near the end.
Saturday is shopping day, that will give me enough time to make a decision.
Thanks again for all your help, where else can I go talk poop & not get arrested.:icon_bb:

Hank has been on the Eagle Pack Lamb Adult formula and the poops and him have been good. It does have chicken fat in it, but that shouldn't be an issue. Hank is intolerant of chicken (pretty much any type of poultry), but there is a difference between chicken, chicken fat, and chicken cartilage. For example, in regards to allergies (yes I know there is a difference between food allergies and food intolerance), a dog that does happen to be allergic to chicken (I believe it is the antigen in the protein) would not likely at all be allergic to chicken fat or chicken cartilage.

Chicken fat & chicken cartilage set him off, just the same.
Anything with chicken of fish no matter how far down in the ingredient list it is.
We are doing a trial run with the NB venesion right now.
I am mixing the Acana lamb & apple for transition, because he had the most solid poops on that, even though he pooped 4-5 times a day.
We are on day 3 & so far so good.

Thule's back to 'porridge poops' - I have no idea why.... picked up some sweet potato for her... sigh!!!
So sorry about Thule, you might have to start right from square one again, just like I did.
Bär sends lots of slobbery hugs to Thule, he knows what it is like not to feel well.

There are a number of foods that are vegetarian that might work for you. So many dogs have intolerance to chicken. Mine didn't do well on it at all nor the fish (Orijen). I am currently feeding my dogs ID (prescription diet from the vet) and they're poos are finally normal. Merrick makes a very good food as does Frumm. I think Venisen or duck and potatoe are your best bets or vegetarian.

Have you thought of going completely off kibble /processed dog food. because Annabelle is allergic to preservatives and we thought that she was allergic to all sorts of stuff. Wheat, chicken, and whatever.
Annabelle is allergic to wheat when it is processed. But when she has organic wheat she is not. Same goes for all dog foods. So when she went on our RAW and initially when we got her she was on cooked food ( to increase her low weight). She has no issues except when we accidentally get fed some toast or any processed meat treats.
So all the allergies were only really food preservatives, all these different numbers, but we have just decided none will do for her.
Annabelle was properly tested at Werribee Uni for her allergies. So we know the exact stuff now. Good luck, Ronnie

I'm just about to start Thule on the Acana Lamb and Apple. Right now, she's on 6Fish, but I'm fairly certain she's allergic to something in it; anyway, she usually does two poops a day, but I'll let you know how that goes; I'll take some time to transfer her over, I still have about two weeks of 6fish left, but if she's going to poop more, I should know fairly soon! How's Bar these days?

Bär is on day 3 of being completely on NB sweet potato & Venison.
So far we are averaging 3 solid poops a day on 3 cups daily divided into 3 meals. That is better then the 5 solid average on Acana Lamb & Apple although they were solid poops.
Yesterday I only gave him 2 1/2 cups to see if that will bring him down to 2 poops a day.
I am just afraid that he does not get enough nutrition with so little food. Anybody who is feeding NB, how much do you feed a day?
