House breaking

Just wonderring if we are doing something wrong with our boy Max. He has been part of our family for about forty days. He is not house broken yet. We are crate training him. Are we expecting too much? Does it take longer then a month to train/ house break a Newf? He is fed twice a day and the food is placed on the floor for about thirty minutes. We do have some days where he does not have an accident and other days when we have two or three accidents. Any suggestions? I trained a Lab and a Golden the same way. Oh, he is about 17 weeks old. Thanks Capt. Dave

40 Days is just the start, I've had one take 9 months for the light bulb to comne on. I've had one that the bulb came on in one day (whoohoo), and 9 months on the other end. I have 4 Newfies. Be patient, stick to the schedule (about every 2 hours) and make a big-BIG deal when he does it right. He'll get the hint. I'm sure others will chime in with much more detail than I have time for right now.

Abbey was pretty much trained in 1 week. Zeke, our Landseer baby boy is a constant work in process. We have had him for almost 4 weeks and he still pees in the house if we don't keep a close eye on him. I think boys are harder, mostly because he doesn't just squat and pee but likes to spread it out in several places. I feel your fustration, just keep up with the praise when he goes in the right place. Zeke does know what "go pee pee" means, so we are making progress. :icon_bb:

Our girl is about that age and nowhere near being housebroken! Whew.....

I don't really expect it from her yet, but it sure would be nice! Ha!

Hey! We're on the Jersey Shore too!

Nanook took around two months to be perfect in the house. Pooka took two weeks. Just like human babies, every puppy is different. Be consistent with the puppy's schedule, don't expect too much too soon, watch that pup like a hawk and try to remind yourself when there's an accident to keep a closer eye on the wee one...

(and congratulations on your baby bear!!!)

Indy took 2-3 months. I think Newfs take a little longer than most breeds. It must be the deep sleep and snoring! The early warning system needs to be developed!

Be patient with your little one. Our vet told us that pups don't have bowel/bladder control until 5 months of age. It can be very frustrating but just keep doing what you're doing. Eventually they will get the picture. Our Golden is 8 months now and is pretty much accident free but was still having occasional "oopses" until about a month ago. Most of the recent ones were our fault (being preoccupied when he was trying to tell us he had to go out). Our Newf was pretty much accident free by 6 months of age. Hang in there!

As everyone said it varies from pup to pup. Hannah was born housebroken. Seriously. Not one single accident in the house, ever. Gabe and Sophie both took much longer.....I think Gabe was about 10 months, actually!
Just stick with the routine and he will get there. Cut off water after 7 or 8 PM, depending on when his bedtime is.
Stick to a schedule. Praise him when he "goes" outside. And, keep alert for his cues. When my now 10 year old Suki was a pup, she would just go to the door and stand there if she needed to go. Never a "woof" or any other signals....just standing there staring intensely at the door.

It varies. Cole took a week. Mira took a week. Molly took almost a YEAR to totally housebreak - she preferred to pee on "soft things" ugh.

Same with our Goldens. Some never had an accident in the house.....others could take up to 7 mos.

Just keep up your training routine. Learn to read the puppy.....and train yourselves!! Pretty soon he'll get there. But right now, I'd expect him to go outside every 2-3 hours minimum.
