Hot spots

Crycket seems to breed hot spots. On antibiotics they clear right up but come back about two weeks later. Any ideas?

When you do the antibiotics, you complete the full course, right? If antibiotics clear it up and then they come back, I'd guess the course isn't long enough to wipe them all out completely. It's worth talking to your vet about.

I find mine more likely to get a hot spot if they have a lot of undercoat. The skin needs to be able to get air to it. Proper drying is also important.

This. Is this a first time like this? Have you changed foods? Do you have a dryer? I'm still working at getting the undercoat out of Zeke (it's like fighting a neverending battle) but I took out the dryer over the weekend and I could not believe how much nesting for the birds flew out, felt sorry for the neighbor two doors down that had their clothes on the line!

Food is the same, a grain free salmon and sweet potato. Always finish the antibiotics. Has not had a bath in a bit and we don't let her get really wet. Might be undercoat, will have to try brushing, raking with the dryer. I feel so sorry for her when I feel them.

Awww...poor Crycket. If she started getting them and all things have remained the same then I'd still check her food. My Berner started with hot spots at about 3 yrs. She had been on the same all stages diet that her breeder recommended since we brought her home. Switched foods, ended up with a venison sweet potato, and she never had another hot spot. In her case she ended up being very sensitive to chicken and salmon so you just never know. I was also just reading about quercetin and bromelain for myself and my dogs as natural allergy supplements. Good luck and I hope she feels better soon.

She has gotten them on 4 different foods. Two of them limited ingredients. Trying a 30 day course of antibiotics.

My guess would be the undercoat needs to be combed out. Do you have a mars coat king? It's the best to pull out undercoat. Chase will get hot spots quickly if she gets a lot of dead undercoat. I have to keep it combed out all the time.

www.groomersmall.com click on the store that says mars coat king. You want to purchase the double wide 18 blade.

If you should suspect it to be a food allergy you can always do the allergy testing through nutiscan (Dr. Dodds) It's less expensive than the blood work (or at least it was here in Jersey) or you can keep testing different proteins and/or grain frees. Also ask your vet for some Genta spray it is helpful to get them to heal faster. Hoping you find your answers and Crycket find some relief. Also, I would suggest keeping logs as to what happens when you change things and time of year etc. We found Myra's allergies were same newf time, next newf year (hehehehe) :) Last year raw helped us tremendously! Best of luck and keep us posted!

I agree with Jenny, undercoat can do it...I blow my dogs almost daily and especially in Winter when they have more coat. Also a good way to treat and see them. Mind you most of mine are on Annabelle and hers are from food allergy.she is allergic to wheat, but also food colouring and preservatives and even fresh meat , where the stock has been on wheat or stuff she is allergic to. I do not use Anti-b's I just blow mine frequently (about 10 times a day)and use the horse purple spray.....Apple cider vinegar can also be used if they are inside a lot. But i find my trusty purple horse spray is the best (Cetrimide).

Will have to get the undercoat rake going and fire up the blower. Might skip some areas as she has a completely raw spot about quarter size on her back. Poor girl yelped when I descabbed it. Thanks for all the suggestions. Hope it is undercoat. My luck she would be allergic to the cats or other dogs. LOL

Where do I get the horse spray? Did search for Cetrimide but came up with cream and an agar for bacterial cultures.

I use either Leucillin purple spray or Horses are Hypocare if mine have scabs/lesions,etc.

Works a treat on them

The antibiotics are working, the spots are drying up. Put the purple stuff on those I could get to. Really trying not to have to shave her again. Daily undercoat raking. Some of the spots were pretty big so scabs are coming off slowly. I can tell she is feeling better at least.

Only one of my boys gets hot spots, and I have always fed a combo of raw and Orijen so I finally had the allergy testing done and SO glad I did! He is sensitive to alphalfa, kemp, and barley which are found in a lot of the best foods. Now it makes sense to me! They even send you a whole list of foods that your dog will tolerate well. In the meantime, my vet put him on an AMAZING new drug that stops itching completely. It's called Apoquel and was a lifesaver as my boy would not leave the hot spot alone. It is not a steroid, anti-inflammatory, or antihistamine, and there are no side effects. It basically shuts off the itching. I am so thrilled I finally got this sorted out and did the testing. It was about $300 but well worth it.
