:darn: I am sorry. :( But from what I have read, some dogs never show any signs of it. Lets hope Hemi is one of them! Sending lots and lots of hugs to your boy for a speedy recovery!

I'm sorry Stacey, don't let that break your heart...many have HD and live very full and wonderful lives.

Prayers for Hemingway's full and speedy recovery. Now you do not have to worry about torsion with bloating, such a peace of mind.

Will you have the X-rays read and explained to you?

It's a shock to find out some bones / joints may not be perfect. Orka just had the full OFA ortho X-rays plus some, and everything's perfect except his hips. His vet told me some dogs with really good hip X-rays are crippled and others with horrible X-rays show no signs even in old age -- it's not an exact correlation and if one keeps the Newf lean and fit with good muscle mass there may not be issues.

Heard that it's hard to get perfect hips with giant breeds.

Glad to hear he is out of recovery and doing well. And don't despair about the HD. He doesn't know he has it. Both of mine newfs had it and my current Aussie mix has it. When he's all recovered you can start strengthening his back end. Good muscles hold in the hips. Is he on any supplements? Cosamin DS and fish oil are helpful as is Microlactin/Duralactin.

Just hang in there. He's still your sweet boy and you're a great mom!

thank you. :) He has a very strong back end, which is why, aside from some popping coming from that region, I never suspected anything. He never seems to have pain or discomfort back there. He definitely does not know he has it because it doesn't hold him back. he has been on Dasuquin with MSM for his elbows and it has been a miracle supplement for him. I'll start him on fish oil soon!!!

Awwww, bless his heart...what a lucious face. Glad he is recovering nicely from the surgery and I hope his HD doesn't cause him problems.

Stacey, I was looking up HD online and I found this image to explain the degree of dysplasia: http://www.web-dvm.net/Hip_Dysplasia.jpg

When compared to Hemi's x-ray, his hips look pretty darn great, even if there is some HD, he's still going to run around his newly-fenced-in backyard like a wild little stallion.

Glad the surgery went well for Hemi. Sorry about the bad news on his hips. But, better that you know, especially since he's not showing any symptoms. Now, you have the opportunity to be proactive from here on out. Hugs to you both.

Awwww.... that smootchy nose! I'm so sorry about the hip diagnosis, but from the sounds of it, that hasn't slowed the little devil down a bit and may never! Elwood has almost the WORST elbow dysplasia out ortho at Tufts has ever seen, but is still the happiest goofiest creature ever! Hugs to all of you!!!!
