Several months ago I lost my beloved 9 yr old newf. My home was not a home after that so I have put a deposit on a new pup that was not born. I was told I would have 2nd pick of the males as the 2 breeders wanted females. The pups were born, 4 males 3 females. They are now 7 weeks old and now both breeders want males as there are 2 stand outs. This leaves me with the last male or a female. Is this how this truly works? The breeders can change their minds at any time after specificly telling me I get 2nd pick?

The breeder I went with actually chooses who gets which puppy based on the puppies personality and also what we are looking for in a pet. I have always had male dogs but my last newf is a female and she is the best little love bug in the world...I didn't know what I was missing...good luck with which ever puppy you get...

Thanks for the information, it helps. I am being told by my co-workers and friends the same thing that you said about female dogs. I know I will be happy with whichever I get as all newfs are full of love!!!

I'm sorry they changed their mind. I don't really know how all that works, but honestly pick your pup based on connection and personality, not sex. We went with rescue both times and couldn't be happier with how things turned out. We've had 2 females. We have cousins that have 2 males. They are all wonderful wonderful dogs!

Congratulations on your new addition. We expect lots of puppy pictures ASAP. Especially bellies. Lots of bellies. And toes. And noses.....I could go on but you get the idea....

Thank you all for your inputs! I am going to see the pups again on sunday. They do not come home until Nov. 3 after their final clearance at the vets. I will definately have tons of pics! Again thank you all!

It is unusual that they would give you second pick when you are not one of the breeders involved. Reputable show breeders pick a pup for the buyer as they know the pups the best and which pups personalities fit the new family. Generally the breeder won't know which pups are which as far as personality, structure, confirmation, bite, etc until they are 8 weeks old. Then they should go to the cardiologist at 10 weeks for their heart checks. I am sure whatever pup you get you will fall in love with as regardless of the other factors, they all give unconditional love to their new families. Good luck with your new pup!

My breeder chose which puppy I would get and after getting him, I (jokingly) asked them to please pick a man for me, as I was so extremely happy with the male they gave me. A more beautiful (inside and out), loving, and devoted companion I could not find. Best luck with whoever enters your life.

I had my heart set on a male pup, but after meeting one of the females, I realized she was a better fit for my son. The breeder also recommended this female pup and we couldn't be happier. This was not a show breeder, but they did all the health checks on parents and heart checks on the pups and I really trusted their judgement. I think that Newfs are such great dogs, and that most males and females have really good temperaments.

My very reputable breeder had 3 Irish Spotted males and she said I had second choice out of them because I was the 2nd person to put a deposit down, so I went in convinced that I would get one of my first two choices. When we got to the breeder's to pick him up, we ended up with our 3rd choice since two families came earlier than us and picked them. I was SO disappointed and upset. HOWEVER, he has been the BEST thing ever and I can't imagine having any other dog. He may not have been my first choice but he was just the dog we needed. Just wanted to share an example where everything works out for the best. :) Good luck!

Thanks for everyones input! Originally the breeders wanted two of the females and after they were born, they changed their minds and wanted the males. Anyway, it is all good, we went yesterday and visited them again and if all goes well, we will have one of the males (there were 4) The best 2 they kept for themselves, however, both have an issue with their testicles not dropping. If they dont drop soon, they will want to keep the one I picked as he too is show quality. : ( We will know later this week as she is taking them to the vet this week. Whichever we get as you all said we will be happy !!! :roflmao: :roflmao:
