Help with haley

The last 3 months for Haley who is 6 1/2 months old
symptoms-frequent urination, white tacky discharge from vagina, inability to hold longer than a few hours, squatting with nothing coming out, elevated white blood cell count( she also had an ear infection in both ears prior to this)

things tried- 3 different antibiotics of which the last was specific to her bacteria found in her urine culture and still have not worked, currently she is on an antifungal because of the discharge from her vagina.

Ruled out- diabetes, cushings, kidney issues, no crystals, no stones

also her vulva is slightly recessed but not enough that it should be causing this, also when we first got her she already had a uti.

Now the vet wants to spay her because he believes it is hormonal related.

Looking for opinions

I'm no authority on this, but to spay her because he believes it is hormone related seems a bit drastic. I'll be interested to hear what others have to say.

And good luck to you, whatever course of treatment is necessary.

Do the symptoms stop while she is on the antibiotic and then return within a day or two after the course is finished?

Also, I'm just curious, does she splash around or paddle with her front paws in her water dish?

Sometimes it takes a LONG time on the antibiotics to completely clear up the problem. If she comes off too soon, it'll come back. How long was she on them?

And to top it off, the vaginal fungal infection can be caused by the....antibiotics.

I'm not sure I go along with "it might be" hormonal. Is there a specialist you can see?

She never splashes in her water dish. The symptoms never got any better on the first two antibiotics because they weren't specific to the bacteria she had, then we had a urine culture done and found out she had 4 seperate bacterias and they prescribed her an antibiotic specifically for the bacterias. She was on them for 2 1/2 weeks and during that time her symptoms actually seemed to get worse.

River had chronic vaginitis as a pup-which didn't clear up permanently on antibiotics, didn't clear up on its own. In fact, it only cleared up after her first heat. The vet told us if we didn't let her go through a heat, it might become a lifelong problem.

After our long ordeal with Pseudomonas, I would have everything cultured. Look into Pseudomonas as well. It is present in the vagina. Sunny's was in her lungs but it can be a lot of places. Ask about this & using Baytril for an antibiotic.

Have her checked for a vaginal stricture. Those can cause chronic uti's and vaginitis. Reproductive vet can check for it. Opening up the stricture generally solves the problem. Some have to let them go through first heat and it clears up. I have a girl that had to open a stricture up. Vet missed it and specialist missed it. She was prone to uti's and vaginitis. The repro vet found the stricture. Had no more problems since it was opened up.

yikes....can dogs get yeast infections? I agree that is sounds a little odd to be placeing your eggs in the 'i think' basket, especially if she may need to go through a heat. Can you see a specialist or another vet for a second opinion?

I would suspect that she will need a really long course of antibiotics for the bladder infection if there is one. Some bladder infections are very persistent. Vaginitis per se is not that big of an issue in girl puppies....UNLESS it ascends and causes a UTI. One thing I found helpful in the girlies that I have had that had chronic puppy vaginitis is to trim the hair around the vulva...as it seems that some of them squat very close to the ground, and I think that hair picks up and "wicks" bacteria up into the vaginal vault. Sometimes, too, the frequent squatting isn't even urinary...it's from the vaginitis, they feel irritated down there, and they squat like they have to pee when they really don't, it's just a normal reaction to the irritation in a puppy. The vet may be able to prescribe a topical to keep the irritation on the vulva down too, and that may help. I seriously would not even discuss spaying for this...you are right to let her have a heat or that little vulva is going to remain inverted forever. The hormonal change at heat is what usually helps it.

I'm with River's mom on this. Darcy also had "puppy vaginitis" that would not clear up. After (actually at the end of) her first heat, we had her spayed - the vet suspected pyo and we did it emergently. I agree with the others; a specialist might be in order. If we had spayed her BEFORE her first heat, she might have had it for the rest of her life.

DO NOT use Baytril in a growing/immature giant breed puppy.
In immature dogs damage to joint cartilage can occur. It is preferable not to use this medication in puppies unless the severity of the infection present warrants it.

is her anus the correct colour or is it inflamed as well as there are plenty of infections from here that can be diagnosed as vaginal
