I am in need of NN expertise...

Quick background: Took Bear in last October for what we thought was problems with his hips...found out he needed both knees repaired. (Vet said his hips could wait). Did one knee in Oct, the other in Jan. He has been doing extremely well. Me, being the over protective Mom...hasn't allowed him to do much playing...very controlled playing.

Today, we were driving in the car for apprx 2.5 hours when all of a sudden he started yelping and yelping. I tried to see what he was doing that could be hurting..but couldn't see very well. Pulled over...checked him/walked him around, he seemed fine. Put him back in car and he let out a small yelp.

Got home, tried to feed him...wouldn't eat. He was in pain. Paced around, sat down, paced around, sat down. Checked for bloat... all is good.

****After feeling around and lightly pushing everywhere on his body... we have found it's his right hip. The pain shows when we push on the side of the hip. Not when we move it around, lift it, rotate it...no problems.

What could he have done? No evidence of ANY pain before we left in the car. For all we could tell, he was just laying in the back of the SUV when the yelping began.

I'm not sure if he just tweeked something? But why is he still hurting?

We have given him some left over meds (previcox) from knee surgery... I should mention... he is still in pain after having the meds in his system for 2 hours. He is no longer yelping (that only lasted for about 30 seconds), but he is still in pain.

Please HElP....

No advice, but I'm sorry he's not feeling well. I definitely hope you can get him comfortable soon. Hopefully its just taking a little while for them to kick in.:grouphug:

Not sure what this could be, but it sounds like no fun at all. Hope it's not something too serious. Keep us updated!

When you say side of hip, is it where the sciatic nerve runs? I am not sure where you mean....It could be back related and it is often painful when pressed in the area (even in humans)
Some anti inflam's might help. Bit like humans, sometimes a road trip can start pain
:hugs: Ronnie

Ronnie, I don't think it's the sciatic nerve...I'll have look for a diagram of exactly where it's at.

Dawn, Doesn't seem quite himself this morning...wasn't extremely interested in his breakfast, but did finally eat. I haven't pushed on the hip yet today....but he is still walking on it.

I was in the same jam last year when Zeke hurt his front leg...I hate that feeling. I ended up using Vin's sinus wrap (warmed it in the micro) Zeke didn't care for the heat so I ended up just petting and massaging him to curb the pain some. Do you think the meds took the edge off last night?

I am so sorry. Can you ice it a couple of times while waiting for the vet appt?

Sometimes prolonged sitting can exacerbate painful areas in humans so perhaps the same is true for dogs?

Sounds like he may have trapped or pinched a nerve, believe me if. Its that its extremely painful and can come on just by moving badly.

Hope he feels better soon

It could also be his trochenteric bursa...it often has a point of pain when you touch it, of severe pain.
It often causes no pain when the leg is moved, but has pain on touch of point and weight-bearing or lying on. Some anti-inflamm's might help. Also If you have an ortho vet they can inject an anti-inflamm in the region (point of pain touch). My Abbey had problems here and my friendly Radiologist used to inject her every 5-6 months. It really helped her. Our local vets would not do it. But the guy i worked with was into dogs and did it to people all the time.

He still seemed in pain Friday evening... but beginning on Saturday afternoon, he seemed to be feeling a better. Although, we have not pushed on hip since Friday....but he is eating and not pacing, etc anymore.

I'm going to keep a close eye on him...and if it starts up again, I will call the ortho vet.

Thank you for the info...

I'm praying that it has taken care of itself....but if not, we'll be seeing the vet.
