Tramadol and Metacam seem to be the most widely used. Adequan injections for severe cases...It is pricey but you can learn to do the injections yourself.

Thule couldn't tolerate Medicam, so she was on Rimadyl.... have you tried the glucosomine/chondrotin/MSM (sp?) supplements.... these other ones are prescription and are the last step for treatment. Here's an excellent site, with lots of options. I've decided that when Thule needs to take something, or needs treatments, I'm going to try acupuncture.

Good luck!

We use a natural, non-prescription formula called Dog Gone Pain.

It works well...a Newf needs 4 of them a day.

We also give Cosamin DS (2 per day), Ester C (3 500mg per day), and MSM (1000 mg per day). All can be gotten at Wal Mart or Sam's Club.

You'll have to order the DGP off the net. Here's the site showing a video and what it does, but I don't buy it there, it's double the cost.

This is where I get it...but do NOT get the Dog Pain Away...it doesn't work. ONLY the Dog Gone Pain. That stuff is amazing.

Try to stay off Rimadyl, Deramaxx, Zubrin, Metacam, etc (they're all NSAIDs) as long as possible. Way too many potential negative side effects.

I give Cosamin DS (the human one from Sams or Costco, much cheaper and same stuff), Vitamin C, MSM and the Dog Gone Pain daily. I also used Tramadol and Metacam for Chance. These worked wonders. The Tramadol is inexpensive. My vet did price matching for the Metacam. I showed him the printout from www.entirelypets.com and he matched the price. When Chance was on the Metacam, I also gave milk thistle and SAM-e for liver support. We also have done acupuncture, which worked great for Chance, and VPI covered some of it too. Sydney has gotten the Adequan shots and they have helped. The vet showed me how and I do it myself.

Has the vet diagnosed arthritis or are you just suspecting it? I'd have bloodwork done before starting on any of the meds so that you have a baseline...and make sure that it IS arthritis first if you haven't done that yet. I know of one case where the people assumed it was hip arthritis and the dog really had a cruciate rupture, so it's important to have a solid diagnosis.
