Heavy breathing while sleeping

Hey there!!

Sorry I haven't been on here much lately to keep everyone up to date on Teddy. He's 6 months old now and is doing great. He's starting to get some growing pains though, poor little guy.

Anyway, does anyone else have a dog that pants nonstop while sleeping? Letting him out to drink some water will often help, but only for a few minutes. Teddy is the loudest sleeper I've ever been around. But he only does this while sleeping. No snoring like my other dog. It's starting to become a problem for me because I'm a really light sleeper and it wakes me up. Any one have any suggestions? Other than making him sleep in a different room.

Thanks!

He might be too hot or in pain. What do you mean by growing pains? How is his heart? Does he have a nice cold place to go if he wakes up too hot?

Orca does this too. I read online that it's just a puppy thing, and Orca does it too, although less and less every week he's been home. :)

I would say he's hot. I'm not expert but the part about growing pains concerns me as my two never exhibited symptoms.

Maggie has only ever done this when she's hot. She has to have 24/7 access to water, even at night, and also has her own fan in the bedroom. She pants and will woof at me if she runs out of water. In summer she also uses her cooling pad. This is all with the room being kept cooler than we ever kept it before having a newf! I put on a sweater or use an extra comforter so she can be cool. :)

It sounds like he doesn't have access to water at night unless you let him out of his crate? Is there any way you can change that? I'm no puppy expert, but at 6 months I would think he can handle it.

Also, I'm a little concerned about what you mean by growing pains?

Thanks guys!

Teddy will limp on a random leg for a few hour or so periodically. I called a vet and asked and they said it sounds like growing pains and that I shouldn't worry unless he limps on one leg for more than a day. Teddy is sneaky though. The first few times I saw him limping I gave him a warm bath to help him relax. He'll do anything for a bath, so he might be faking it.

As Maggie said get him is own fan ;) Last night I waited to hear the snoring....it puts me to sleep, love it! Zeke had a limp here and there as a pup, our vet was not to concerned....we did the rest and restriction thing for a week or two and it cleared up. If it continues even after that, I would have things checked out.

Personally after all the issues we had with Max l would get him checked on his limp as there are things they can check if its growing pains.

Sounds like he is too hot perhaps a cooling pad and fan though has he done this since you had him as excessive panting can be a sign of pain.

I would also suggest verifying that his limp is, in fact, Pano, and not something else entirely. If he does have Pano, there are steps you can take to mitigate the issue.

I would also suggest getting him his own floor fan, which can be found at places like Walmart for as low as $20. He may just be very hot.

We noticed this with four and a half month old Obi, too. Turns out the poor guy was too hot. We turned off the heat in the house now that spring is here and have a fan on him when he is upstairs with us or in a warmer room. Also, it is worth mentioning that it is now too warm in canada to leave a newf in the car. They heat up fast!

A van will for sure help if he is hot and we got Thor a water bottle to keep in his crate, which helps. I often wake up to hearing ting ting ting while he drinks water like a hamster. lol

I have to keep the apartment around 65° regardless of the season, otherwise Admiral will pant and drool everywhere. It's a little expensive, and the rest of us all have to snuggle under sweaters and blankets, but if it keeps my girl happy I'm happy.

Thanks guys!

And I don't think the panting is a pain thing. He pants whether he is limping or not.

And like I said, he will limp for a little while and be just fine. But he's still in a great mood and isn't sore to the touch/has full mobility. I'm really not too worried about that. If it lasts for more than a few days I'll take him to get checked out.

I would still get the limp checked.it may just be pano but there are a lot of things that mask themselves .

I have seen dogs stiff when getting up and fine once walking who have had issues.my Max being one of them and l would rather pay out than miss something.
Also our furkids hide pain well.

Everyone knows l am an obsessive overprotective newf mum but past experiences have put my radar on ping alerts with illnesses.

I hope it is a growing pain like pano but better safe than sorry

Thanks for the tip. If it persists, I'll take him to get checked out. The last few days he's been fine. Running around and playing. He's a little upset right now. My other dog escaped and got into something and then puked on Teddy. =(
