Heartworm Prevention

We give Interceptor year round here - mostly for intestinal parasites - though our mosquitoes are quite large and obnoxious during the spring and summer months!

We give heartgard from roughly April-Oct. Really no need for year-round here since we have brutal cold winters. I know others give year-round here just 'cuz it is easier/cheaper than having their dog tested each year before starting up again, but I chose to test every spring and not give my dog chemicals year-round.

Our vet gave us the equine form of liquid ivermectin, to give to our newfs. It's called EQVALAN. One 100 mL bottle cost under $100, and contains enough product to treat all three newfs for about three years. Quite a savings over the usual heart worm preventative.

Once the dogs had the blood tests to be sure they're clear of heartworms, we started giving them one mL a month each. Works great! Ask your vet about it.

The one we use is Ivomec. NOT THE PLUS....the regular Ivomec.

Same thing. Liquid Ivermectin.
