grooming fail

Shiva went to the groomer today and I think I may be sick. 7 blade all over except for her head and tail. It was a groomer we have used in the past with no issues so I'm at a loss as to what she was thinking. I don't know what I'm going to do we go camping this weekend she looks terrible and I'm worried about sunburn.

I would be so angry! I wouldn't be using her again. I wouldn't let her be in the sun too much. Without their coat, they are still going to get very hot also. The rescue I have is missing most of his coat. I just don't let him in the sun much at all.

Go talk to her. She should never have shaved your dog without your permission. Even when I get a matted dog in I do not shave without contacting the owner. You need a refund because you didn't get the groom you asked for.

She was quite aware I was unhappy and she did reduce the charge substantially, but it just doesn't fix the issue. She did have some matting in her hind quarters (she has a terrible coat in that area). The rest of her was not matted I had spent considerable time on the coat this spring and could run a barber comb through with little resistance.

Lynn, is there a certain sunblock I should look for?

The sunblock should help with keeping the skin conditioned especially if there is any razor burn. I would probably go with a light sun block.

I don't know if it makes a difference in dogs, but I have strong risk of getting melanoma and my derm told me to go with lotions that had zinc or titanium dioxide in them. Usually the "sensitive" type of most brands has it. I've used it in Jamaica and Hawaii and barely even freckled - and I'm as pale and freckly as any good Irish girl is supposed to be!

Yup - Australian Blue Lizard and California Baby both make "physical block" sunblocks. Use 'em for me (fair skinned redhead) and DD.

The Blue Lizard is also water resistant by Aussie standards which are much more strict than ours - the company just never paid to have the testing done in the US.

I would be furious with the groomer - poor you and poor dog. :(

That's horrible and I would be extremely upset. A substantial reduction in the charge is not enough- you need to be fully refunded. It is not just a bad haircut and the groomer needs to understand that newfs do not get shaved and the damage she can cause because of shaving Shiva.
I have very fair skin and auburn hair, I burn anytime I am in the sun if I am not protected well... even while driving the car with the window down. I have a long sleeved spf shirt that works very well because I do not have to keep reapplying sunblock. Maybe you can look into getting one of those or even a long sleeved t-shirt to put on her and cover her although you will still need to do something about her back end.

Poor baby! I would be furious! We are fairly new Newfie parents, but have a Leonberger. I am glad that I always give detailed instruction with the groomer. It seems redundant, but obviously necessary. I know I am annoying, but I read that groomers speak a different language than we do and we must be very specific about what we want and don't want. I would call the groomer and ask what made her do this? What was she thinking? Leave a negative review on Yelp for her to warn others. Terrible.
