Grass Clumps

Elvis has developed some weird obsession with eating the grass clumps after we mow. He'll run out there and start chowing down like he's the first one through the salad bar. He's never out there alone so we see him do this and try to get the grass out of his mouth.

We don't have any chemicals on the lawn but I can't imagine it's a good thing for him to eat giant clumps of grass. We don't always have clumps after mowing, but we mowed today after a lot of rain and forgot to bag the clippings. He never goes out there and eats grass any other time which is why it's so weird to us.

Is this something we really need to stop him from doing? I have no problem pulling hunks of slobbery grass of his tongue, but my husband is a little hesitant to do so and he's the one who let's him out in the morning.

Gabriel is similarly obsessed with this one clump of grass that grows on the hill in the yard. He will stand and munch on this one clump like a cow. And he only does it after dark when he goes out for the last time!
I don't know what it is about this one clump. I have mowed it down once this year and as soon as it came back up he started chomping again.

As long as the E is not eating mass quantities at one time it's prob not going to hurt him as long as there are no leaves and other stuff in the grass.
My Sophie got really sick once after I mowed and mulched leaves. I thought she was bloating and she went to the vet. Later that night she threw up a big wad of leaves!

Hopefully as the season progresses he will lose his interest. The grass must just be extra tasty right now since we had such a late spring.

All my kids do this when I mow leaving clumps :) It is better for them as they don't have to walk around the yard eating one blade of grass at a time.

Moonlight does this, too, but it can also make her throw up, so I try to avoid leaving clumps. After the rain we've had and the really high grass out there, I have my work cut out for me this afternoon.

Lumpkin will grab at lumps of grass if we leave them i tend to take them away though as i know of someone dog who ended up with a blockage from eating too much grass.

Maggie doesn't eat mown grass clumps (prefers to roll in that!) but she will munch on tall pieces of grass like she's a cow every so often. We discourage it because it sometimes makes her throw up, but usually its not a big deal. She just eats a few pieces while on a mosey around the yard. I would think Elvis is fine as long as he's not eating huge quantities and its not causing any ill effects.

Veggies......dogs love veggies. Horse poop is very similar to it too and mine love it too. I feed my dogs RAW and a lot of veggies.....they don't seem to worry about mown grass, but nice green hot horse poop is still a fave

Orca loves grass. From what I understand, dogs can't digest the cell walls in plants and he poops it all out. I don't worry about grass or sticks as long as he's not going overboard. I think part of the appeal is that the newly cut grass is very fragrant.

I don't mind when they munch on the fresh growing shoots, but I'd definitely discourage the eating of clumps.

I joke that Takota doesn't need to graze just because he looks like a Holstein cow. Ursa will also occasionally each shoots of grass. Bella thinks freshly mowed clumps are put there for her to roll in though. As long as it isn't making then sick or going overboard I don't worry about it.

If you remember I had the same problem with Jake...he would eat our lawn up! He would do exactly what you are describing...he would take whole chunks of sod from the lawn and eat it. We could not stop him from doing it but it never made him sick or anything. When we moved from a manicured lawn to the mountains he now prefers pieces of grass instead of eating the whole clump. LOL...sorry that you are enduring this as it will drive you nuts especially if you have a gorgeous lawn...
