Game of Thrones?

I'm sure our household isn't the only Nerd Household on the board gearing up for tonight's HBO premiere of G.o.T.!

Are any of you guys doing anything special? Evidently the premiere contains the feast scene at Winterfell, where Ned and his family make King Robert and his court welcome. So Sandy and I are eating our faces off in celebration!

Some friends of mine started a blog purely dedicated to making food inspired by George R.R. Martin's Song of Ice and Fire books - it is AWESOME. San and I will be trying out a few of the recipes tonight.

And if anyone wants to chat about the premiere later - friend me on FB!

We will be watching. Well, maybe just me. Gitche's not really into TV :)

Saw the teaser a couple weeks ago, looked pretty good. Its been so long since I read the first book i'm a bit rusty on the details which might actually help me enjoy the series more.

Looking forward to the new book, A Dance with Dragons. In stores July 12, 2011!

Well we will definitely be watching, but we are not doing anything as extravagant as that! That looks delightful! Maybe I'll let you guys try out the recipes, and then let us know which ones are the best.

Can't wait for the premiere!

Ladies - it's a well-known fantasy epic that HBO has just turned into a tv series. The premiere was tonight.

I saw it. Since I haven't read the books, I was lost, but there's a great breakdown of the families, the lands, and basic history here:

Click on Guide to Houses (upper right) and then from there you can click on the people's faces, anything highlighted in red (or yellow) and see who's who and what the basis story is

In my experience, movies and shows almost always disappoint over the book/graphic novel/comic book, etc so sometimes it's better to watch then read. An exception to that for me was The Lord of the Rings Trilogy (The Hobbit's next. WOOT!) and (to an extent) the Harry Potter films.

I didn't watch last night as my schedule is dictated these days by a tiny night terrorist named Rowan, so I can't tell you with any accuracy whether or not that was the case with GOT though.

Well, in my opinion, they did the best job I've seen of sticking to the book...mostly. (If anybody saw Sword of Truth, that was an example of how NOT to stick to a beloved fantasy series.)

It was raw, didn't shy away from a lot of the grittiness of the book, but they flew through at a breakneck pace. I don't know how anyone who hadn't read the books was supposed to figure things out. As Nessa noted on Facebook, they changed the whole feeling of some scenes (and Daenerys is one of my favorite characters). I think the show will really develop over the next few weeks, but I do thing they skipped over a lot of the groundwork that George R.R. Martin painstakingly laid in the first 1/2 of the first novel.

I read your original post to my husband to see if he understood anything you said. His response? "We need to get HBO!"

He is a Fantasy nut. You'd think I would have heard of this. But you might as well have been speaking Finnish to me!

I wish you lived closer so we could add you to our list of people to invite to our LOTR Fe(a)st! We've been wanting to have a dinner party where the Trilogy is playing in the background and we have a true feast, complete with Mead and wild game!

Again, I'm just going to let my Dork Flag fly!

Kristen. I would fly for that. I mean - not for the next three or four months...clearly...but after that? I'm totally game. I will bring my bee honey, and I will make scones for breakfast the next morning.

I know GRRM worked really closely with the production team and the screenwriters. (Which probably helps explain why he STILL hasn't published Dance With Dragons %$#$%##@R%@!) Can't understand why he let them ruin that moment between Daenerys and Drogo. Have NO idea how they're going to salvage that.

I totally agree that they flew through quickly - a requirement I suspect if they really intend to do the entire first book in a 10 episode arc. Gah. But yes - if you've never read the books and want to watch the series - do a little research on the various characters etc first - because otherwise you will be completely lost. Sandy has never read the books, so while we were eating our faces off I was ALSO drilling him in the five major families that I figured he'd be dealing with in the first episode, and some of their back story, (Stark, Lannister, Baratheon, Targaryen, Arryn) - before the next episode I'm going to have to explain the whole Theon Greyjoy thing...I just didn't get to it this time around.

Nessa-just read that a lot of people think they will show the second half of the wedding night next episode since they didn't actually show anything. That would be one way to redeem themselves.

Someone I know turned me on to The Game of Thrones and I struggled with it at first, but after a few chapters GMRR sucked me in. I read LOTR first over 40 years ago, so its hard to remember how long it took JRRT to suck me in. BUT, it really isn't fair to compare two completely different stories.

Hmmm, hated Harry Potter? I have not heard that from many people. The hype was a little difficult for me to get through, but once I did I loved the series.

We have GoT DVR'd and ready to go tonight. I will let you know what I think. I didn't read the books. Afraid I haven't read a lot of fantasy (or fiction!) in a long time. I spend time with blogs, you guys, fb and then non-fiction if there is time left over. (currently reading Buy-ology, which I like)

We are huge nerdy geeks in this house. The list of shows we watch would warm any nerd's heart, I would imagine. Just finished watching Firefly with my teens (well, my son is 12, but..) and they loved it. My work here is done. They were not going to be able to overcome their DNA, anyway. ;)

My ALL -TIME favorite fantasy book is "Jonathan Strage & Mr. Norrell". Think: Jane Austen meets Harry Potter. IT is so good. Just got my 17 yr old hooked on it. She loves it, too.
