Well, I release spiders* outdoors, so I am a softie too. The only thing I kill (maybe instinctively) is mosquitoes when they're biting.

*My record spider release was one that was almost 4 inches across, when you include its legs. That was dicey. In the end I put a giant garbage container under it, knocked it off the curtain (bounced it off is more like it) into the can and ran it outside. Shudder! It was still trying to climb up the can after me, I swear!!

Maggie will catch some big bug in her mouth, have no idea what the name is, maybe a katydid. It will start to make a buzzing sound. The sound freaks her out so much she wont eat it. Of course it also makes her too scared to let it go in fear of what it will do to her when she releases it.

You're my new hero. Because there's no freaking way I'd do that. Although at 4" across the spider is, in my head, way too big to kill safely. So then I name them, and make bargains with them. "You stay over there, and I'll stay over here, and everything will be just fine, Fred. You hear me? STAY."

 I just struck such a deal last Friday when Shawn was at work. He's my resident spider catcher/releaser, but since he wouldn't be home for another 7 hours I just got down on the floor and told the Zebra Spider "You're welcome to stay in the foyer for now, but if you show yourself when my husband's home, you're outta here." Sure enough, 3 days later Shawn yelled to me from upstairs and told me he'd caught a really big Zebra Spider. I asked him, "Is it missing a forelimb?" He said yes, so I told him, "I know that spider!"

He's living in our Hydrangeas in the front garden now...

It's funny; I grew up as sort of a farm girl. I would go fishing and catch then clean my own fish, I had a Husky that I taught the "Go get it" command which to her meant that there was a rabbit in the yard to hunt and I also was engaged previously to a hobby farmer and I helped him raise 3 steers for meat (I swear I'm not cold-hearted...it was pretty hard on me, I cried when they were brought to Lowell, IN to meet their maker. I'd even named them in an attempt to get him to change his mind and let me keep the 3 of them as pets). But as I get older, I seem to get more and more sensitive.

I can't even kill a fly now. Only the occasional mosquito...

Very funny. :!rolling: I am very afraid of spiders.

Not to be rude but I would have taken the frog away. I just didn't find letting a dog eventually kill one very nice or humorous. It is cruel. If it had been a cat or something else, I am sure the reactions would have been different...but maybe this is just me.

Thank goodness, I thought I was the only one! There is nothing funny about the torture and killing of any kind of animal and I guess I just don't get the joke.

Nessa, you are to much. But I agree once they hit a certain size I just can't kill them. I brought this one in from the wood pile last fall(I didn't know I did). He was HUGE.....and he jumped and blended in with the fireplace....ain't no way he was staying in. I imagined him walking on my bed and said your outta here. I use a plastic cup and slide an envelope underneath and out they go. Anyone have the stink bugs, I keep finding them all over the place and I'll tell you DON'T KILL THEM....that's when they stink.

Stink bugs are the worst. I don't like to kill anything. I even chase the mice away from the barn so the cats don't get them. However, stink bugs are NASTY! They have been falling from our vents all winter. I used to bring them outside. Now, I flush them down the toilet. My little one's first word was either "bug" or "Haley hair" - both seem to elicit the same reaction.

Are you sure these aren't toads? Technically both critters are frogs, but frogs have smooth moist skin and tend to live in water; toads are brownish and have drier bumpy skin - they can be found most anywhere it's moist. If these are toads, be REALLY CAREFUL. They have glands behind their eyes that squirt poison when threatened. If it's a big toad with big glands, it can kill a dog...

I have to agree..... Not judging. Just can't stand the thought of a frog or any other animal being toyed with ...then killed. And I would not let my newf or cat do it. I don't live in the wilds so don't have to do the whole nature thing.. Can't even stand the thought of cats doing it to mice. Like I said.. not much of a country or nature girl.. A creature is a creature. And yes i have swatted flies.. But I would never let my Newf play with then kill a little creature... let alone find it amusing. JMHO.....

Inspired by this thread, I decided to start acclimating Mila to the amphibians by us. We have so many frogs, toads and salamanders out here that it's almost of biblical plague proportions and I know that it will get even worse as the hubby is trying to get our yard certified as a Backyard Habitat.

So this evening on our walk I took Mila over to the wetland area right by our house and introduced her to a Western Chorus Frog and a toad (on the way home). I can't bear the thought of her spending every spring/summer in our yard torturing and killing all these little guys. It would be a bloodbath and I would probably need therapy  So far, so good. She seems to have a healthy curiousity, but I still will be teaching her to "leave it" if her interest seems to be too heightened.

No judgement here either, but I am thankful that this thread was brought up...otherwise I probably never would have thought about it at all, until it was too late. So thanks everybody! The things you never think of...
