Floor covering

I have tile floors in my kitchen and foyer area. It is a pretty large area. I'm trying to find some decent floor covering for when the puppy gets here without spending a fortune on rugs. It doesn't have to be anything fancy, but I'd like it to not look absolutely horrible. Any suggestions? Buying an area rug to cover a decent portion of the kitchen is going to cost me roughly 2k (for a cheap rug) - which is outrageous. There has to be another alternative that I am just missing. I can get a runner for the hallway from the foyer to the kitchen and a smaller area rug for the foyer, but the kitchen is turning out to be an issue.

How big is your kitchen!? Home Depot has inexpensive area rugs and runners that work well on tile. You can replace them when they are used up and buy new ones.

oh I didn't think of the booties! Do they make those puppy sized?

As far as the size - I'll have to get back with that, the kids have "misplaced" the measuring tape again. It is huge though. "Massive waste of space with a table" is what I call it. A 9x12 will cover most of one portion, I'd need at least a 4x6 to cover the other area - and I'd still have tile showing with that, but most of it would be covered - I think. I could be off by a bit, but that seems pretty close. 9x12 rugs are expensive! I would think I'd be able to find some sort of maybe indoor/outdoor type of rug that I could get for a few hundred, but no luck where I've checked so far. I've actually been looking for rugs for the kitchen for years - I hate the tile and my husband refuses to get rid of it - but everything I've ever looked at is wool or wool blend and those are pricey when you get to a 9x12. I know there are other options out there, I've just always looked for form over function, now I'm ready to look at function over form! lol! Jedi slipped on the tile the other day (he is fine but it scared me!) and he doesn't have nearly the amount of fur around his paws that a newf has so I have to do something before the puppy gets here!

homedepot here in canada sells 9x12 for about $110. they are remnants from the big rolls, that are already etched. we bought 2 so far, one for the livingroom and one for the kitchen. bär was just sliding to much on our floors. he is an orthopedic mess and this helps him get up from sitting. like you we did not want to spent a lot of money for carpets that will have high traffic, sloober, food, and dirty paws 24/7.

$110 really!? I like $110!! lol!!=-)) I don't see anything on their website, but I'll go to the store in the next couple of weeks and actually talk to someone - I'm sure they won't have remnant stuff on the site. That would be perfect though! Thanks=-)

I could write a book on floor coverings..... Been through every combination possible and have quite possibly spent more on flooring as situations with health changed... Had carpet.. got rid of carpet.. got laminate... then mats.. and more mats.. laminate lifted... carpet put back down.. :tequila:

And that is just the main floor of the house.. Don't get me started on the deck... :grrr:

Still.. all worth it...

We actually bought some cheap rugs on clearance at Lowes and bought the rubber backing to keep them from moving around. We went with cheap at first because I knew Emma would have accidents and chew and dig on them. And she has not disappointed :) No accidents since Christmas but she does still try to chew on them or pull them up from time to time . I made a NO NO can (an empty can with pennies inside and a lid) to dissuade her from her fun.

I found some 9x12 jute for about $500 which isn't bad. I like the remnant idea though - at least until potty training is done! Once he's potty trained I don't mind spending a bit more on something we'll actually like, but initially - the cheaper the better. I won't complain about throwing out a $110 remnant in 5 or 6 months! lol=-)

Do you have a used carpet store near you? We have one here that will bind the edges of remnants or used carpeting to use as area rugs. But do check out the big box hardware stores. They usually have a good selection of rubber backed area rugs.

Oh you don't have to have HUGE rugs - remember the Newf itself is long - just space runners and shorter rugs along the normal paths in your house. I find attractive ones at Target or Kohls, or whatever. They're pretty cheap, and when worn out can be recycled in the garage for a bit. :)

good idea! I have this horrible vision in my head of this little fluffball going top speed and hitting a space on the tile that isn't covered and doing flips and splits and eventually banging into a wall....but they aren't so little for long, I have to remind myself of this! lol!

Overstock.com is great, and I have one rug from a rug store, it was a 9x13 remnant bound for $300.

Booties don't have to be steam cleaned and don't stain smell like peed on fur covered carpet does.

Shiny floors is an issue for pup-old dog, with all the in between ages too. We went to rough slate. it made a huge difference and the dogs love the tiles. We had remnant carpet and bridges between carpets before that. And still our aged newfies got into trouble with sliding

I would love to do slate. However, the problem is my daughter. Grace is not her middle name.....or her 10th name....or anything before or after that. She flies at top speed everywhere (I'm not sure she knows how to walk!) and she doesn't always watch where she is going - slate would be a disaster for her, too many little edges - just enough to trip over. I have to find something that works for everyone. I'll look into the booties - but I love - L O V E furry paws - my favorite part of animals are their paws - so covering them makes me sad. I like the remnant idea though. I can work with that for starters - not too expensive for me to replace as needed.

Thanks for input everyone=-)

We got runners from Lowe's. I spent about $200, and I can replace them every year if I want to. They are rubber backed so they don't skid. I just put them on the main walking paths. Maggie steps off to the side to sleep on the wood floor or tile when its warm.

We went through a brief period when she had serious tummy trouble, and had a few accidents on the rugs. I took them outside and hosed them off - worked great.

IKEA has some really nice carpets too.

You definitely should not get an expensive carpet for a puppy, because he WILL pee on it at some point ;). I wouldn't necessarily even get a carpet just for a puppy. Tile kitchen shouldn't be too slippery for pup.

We have a place called Carpet Mart. They bind the remnants of their larger carpets. I pay between $100 to $120 for 9X12 and replace every year. Good Luck!
