Failed the CGC Test

:icon_redface: We failed the CGC test this weekend. I don't want to say Ziva failed it and I don't want to blame my DH either. She pulled too much on the leash, all but attacked the nice golden retriever trying to greet him and then wouldn't come to my DH on the long lead. We went to a puppy social class, beginning obedience, advanced obedience and CGC class.

I think if we had taken the test right after the last session of classes she would have passed but that test was cancelled due to lack of participation. We didn't work with her enough or consistently enough during the time before this test.

I guess they are right that obedience is a constant thing not just during class! We will have to keep working on it. :smashy:

You can work on the exercises and get a more consistant result. You can always take the test again.

Bummer...but take it as a chance to work with your pup and not only get the obedience back to where you would like it...but you will also continue building your bond.

even at nearly 18months old Max still needs consistent and regular training work so take heart.
remember its a marathon not a sprint you will get there

A fail is a challenge. We just signed up for the CGC class to begin next week. I don't have overly high hopes that Chumley can pass either, but I want the challenge. He had to be evaluated to even get in the class as I told the truth that his last class was for reactive dogs. She looked very worried when I told her that one. However, he's come a long way and he had to prove it to the trainer. I feel it was an accomplishment just getting into the class.
I do remember the trainer telling me that the loose leash is often the downfall for many of the dogs. So, just think of it as a challenge and keep working toward that goal.

Keep training and working on that loose leash at all times. My 10.5 year old girl still gets at least one shot training session a week just to keep her sharp. The 3 year old is still getting a session every day and she is taking her TD test in January only because I won't be in town for the one in a week. I have always continued to train so I KNOW that commands are solid no matter what. A fail told you what you need to work on. You will get there I'm sure.

Don't despair. My Angus took 3 sessions before he was good to go, but then he was excellent. You'll be so much closer to your Newf too.

As an evaluator I have observed that a lot of people when they start out have the observation that, "Oh we'll neven pass," and find out that with consistant and constant work the CGC Test becomes "Wow this was so eary." First don't give up. Work more consistantly and work as much as you can at pracitcing. Once your Newf is consistant you'll have no trouble. You'll slso Bond more too. Newfs are working dogs, and working and having fun they like and enjoy.
