Ester-C

I am going to pick up some ester-c and start giving it to Lucy seeing as though her hips are questionable but asymptomatic. Which kind should I get and how much should I give her? She's almost 8 months old and about 90 pounds. She also just finished up antibiotics for her second UTI in 3 months so I'm thinking maybe a cranberry cabsule also.

Actually you can give more. I'll have to look it up but I've read that 1500 mg a day is the minimum goal to help with hip issues. Our Golden puppies got 1500 mg per day from 4 mos, until about 5-6 mos ...then got 2000 mg per day until about 2 yrs of age.

I believe the amount for pups that are growing, should be at around 2000 mg per day if they can tolerate it (ours always have but you have to start upping the amount over time).

With an "older" pup...older than 4 mos, start out giving 500 mg, then up it to 1000 mg after a few days, then wait a few more days then up again to 1500 mg...then again to 2,000. If the dog gets loose stools/diarrhea before you hit the 2000 mg, back it down to the prior level and stay there. That's the dog's tolerance level and is all the body can use..

Unneeded Vit C is eliminated from the body ... is not stored, so giving that amount won't hurt.

Younger pups should be supplemented (even before weaning) but the amount is gradually increased as they grow/age.

This is a really interesting article by Larry Mueller re: Hip Dysplasia and Vit C. It's been circulating around for years, and can be found all over the net. The article was written by Larry Mueller, Hunting Dog Editor, Outdoor Life 1996.

Here it is on the Working Dogs site (which has print that you can actually SEE) but it's on many other sites as well:

http://www.workingdogs.com/doc0039.htm

It explains how much to give the dogs, from birth until about 18-24 mos, while their joints are forming.

We've always given Ester C to our pups. Not a single one of our Goldens in 15 years has had HD. We've been very fortunate.

I was wondering about this too. Our breeder wanted us to give Baloo Ester C. I think we were to start at 500 and work our way up to 3000 (but not until later) we stopped giving it to him because it was causing really loose stools.

Then I heard not to give Ester-C because it has Calcium (the label says calcium absobacate) and you don't want to give puppies additional calcium. I don't know if this is the same as straight calcium???

I want to start him on it again but I will break it into smaller multiple dosed instead of one big one. But I don't want to be giving him too much calcium either.

Is there a place that lists doses per pound of puppy? All the places online that I have seen caution agaisnt giving it to puppies in the first place so I'm not sure.

(Oh and we bought the powder form so we could adjust the dose easy and mix it into his food.)

The amount of calcium when supplementing with Ester C is not over the amount of calcium that would be harmful to a pup.
Also, Ester C is not only an immune booster but helps the body to absorb glucosamine/chondroitin to maintain healthy joints.

I like the powder form of Ester C too.

our dogs get 2000mg per day as per Katy's breeder. Even when she was a baby she was given 1000mg. She never had issues We were told not to give any calcium additives.
We also give Glucosamine/chondrontine, kelp, Vit C, fish oil

The site is still up. Years ago I used to talk to this guy.. I am sure he has passed away by now...but they talk about mega C...This guy refined and refined ester C into a compound he believed prevented skeletal issues. Pretty convincing...has the literature to back it up.

Jenn...I don't think it'll cause a problem for Murphy since he's grown. It's the excess calcium in growing puppies that's a concern. It's important to have the calcium/phosphorus ratio correct for puppies while their bones and joints are forming. If there's too much of one or the other, bad things can happen.

And there's a difference in food based ("free") calcium versus supplements. Food based calcium is best because of how the body uses it.

Thanks Donna.. I started with the calcium after his second surgery and his bones seemed to heal slow. The surgeon did not seem too impressed but said it couldn't hurt. Not sure now if it does any good. I will definitely keep him on his other supplements though including the Ester C..
