Dog Parks are a BIG MISTAKE!!~Update

Kali was attacked at a dog park this past Sunday 4/17/11. (Kali wouldn't hurt a fly!) This long haired retriever came out of nowhere, jumped on Kali's back and took her to the ground. Kali completely tore her ACL tendon and is having surgery on Monday to put a plate in her right back leg all due to the trama she sustained from this other dog. Kali is 7 yrs old and doesn't deserve what has happened to her. I ask for all your prayers that the surgery will be a success and Kali will heal quickly. Unfortunately, my vet and lawyer both say that this will be difficult if not a complete failure in trying to get the assailant's owners to pay for Kali's vet bills......which stand now, BEFORE surgery at about 1k and another 3-5k after the surgery. Apparently, since these dog parks are open to the public it is hard to prove an attack. However, they also state that your dog must be friendly and able to get along with other dogs. My vet also said that they are a haven for infection and bacteria, especially from other dogs.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE don't bring your dog to the dog park. I wouldn't wish what I am going through right now on my worst enemy.

PS: The owner of the other dog refused to give me any contact information and never even apologized.

Just pray for Kali. I will upload pix once she is home from the hospital.

Update - Fri - 4-22:
Kali was uneasy last night. She was huffing hard, so i turned the a/c on and it calmed the huffing. She was uncomfortable, moving from one spot to another. Then she jumped on the couch! (My husband forgot to put the pillows on the couch to block off). Her highness has been eye-balling her throne since this happened and doesn't know what it is off-limits. Well, she was on there for about 2 minutes and slowly got down. Now she knows WHY it's off limits....it's too soft!

It is hard enough for Kali to stand, let alone squat to conduct business. Sometimes there is an unavoidable accident. I've been laying towels downstairs for when i happens again, but they are not suited for this task. 34x36 incontenance bed pads are. I used to have tons of them when my grandma was sick, but then gave them to the local shelter once she passed. I was wondering if anyone had any that I could borrow. I've looked on line and even the used ones are $10 each OR if you have any suggestions for something else, that would be great too.

Thank you all for the prayers and love. Last night I was reading some of your sentiments to my husband and Kali layed at my feet listening and watching me as I read them. (And now I find my eyes filling with tears again and must stop fo now.) I love you all. Newf.net friends are second only to my fur-babies. Thanks for getting me through this.

I'm so sorry to hear that!!
I take Molly our Irish Setter to the dog park but I'm always a little nervous about it... There are a lot of irresponsible owners out there.

Hope she heals quickly.

This is awful, and something I have been concerned about. Thus, we don't do dog parks.
Nope....I won't do them either. The times I went, people were standing around talking with each other and paying NO attention to their dogs. Poor Kali....Hope she feels better soon!

I am so sorry and the offending dog's owner is an embarassment to other responsible dog owners and just plain old decent human beings. Hugs to your poor girl and to you. Unfortunately, yet another reason I won't take my girl to a dog park...

How horrible. Bless poor Kali and you. I have never had a desire to take my dogs to dog parks and this is a solemn confirmation of my concerns. Prayers for a good recovery.

I'm so sorry to hear that Kali was hurt! Will pray for her healing and the family too. Thank you for sharing this important information. You have undoubtedly saved other dogs from serious injury in the future. My Abbi is just one year old. Thus far we have had play dates with dogs we know and will keep doing that, thanks to your warning.

Poor Kali:(

Oh my  breaks for your Kali, that is so so sad! It makes me so angry when dog owners won't take responsibility for their dogs GGRR:Mad: When Baloo was attacked by a pit bull (whose owner was NOT being responsible for her dog at all, first time in the dog park and NO LEASH!) :hitting head: We never did get reimbursed for the bill even though we had witnesses she left right away and was never found! Lots of newfie :hugs: and prayers to you and Kali, please keep us posted...

Thank you all for your hugs, kisses and most of all your prayers. I've been praying like mad since this happened, but I believe in the power of many.

Kali has touched many lives since I rescued her 4 years ago. The 5 year old little girl next door calls Kali her friend. On warm days, Kali lets this little girl walk her around on leash. The little girl thinks she is so special because Kali doesn't pull or bark and listens to every secret the little girl tells her. She drew Kali a picture yesterday and wrote, "I hope my friend Kali feels better really soon. I miss our walks already."

I cried.:cry::cry::cry::cry::cry:

Owwwwwwwww - Poor Kali,

Ya know living where we do Buddy doesn't get much socialization and I'd been considering taking him to the dog park now and again for some socialization training - but the more I hear about dog parks the more I'm sure this is a really BAD idea.

I am so sorry Kali got attacked and will keep her in my thoughts and prayers. Being married to a vet, we have never taken any of our dogs to a dog park for the very same reason your vet stated. The only dog park here is our big backyard. Having multiple dogs, they get plenty of socializing right here. Shame on that other owner for being so rude and irresponsible.
