Dog park aggravation

Sorry, gotta do it. It may help me get this lady out of my mind. She's a hipster, comes to the park today with a 1.5 year old lab/border mix. Sees Cooper, asks if he's a Newfoundlander (sigh) I say yes.

She starts on how her husband wanted a big dog (hers is probably 70 lbs so not small) but how she has 3 kids and it would be just too much work. And besides she wants a dog she can control and how could you ever control a dog who's bigger than you?

Deep breath. I say, I got my NewfoundlandS because I have kids. My dogs are great with kids, very gentle. And they are the easiest dogs I have EVER walked on a leash because I TRAINED them and they do NOT pull.

Another lady asks me if I want to train her shepherd mix on a leash. He pulls all the time, she's tried a prong, a chain, an ez walk harness, he just pulls and pulls. I said, Be a Tree. She said, Oh I tried that but it didn't work. I said, if you do it right, it works. She said I did, I stopped when he pulled but he just kept on pulling. Um, that's the point, yeah? You have to stay still, not give up, and then IMMEDIATELY reward/click/yes and keep walking as soon as the dog lightens up and looks at you. (bangs head against wall).

So hipster mom now starts in on how her dog is mouthy. She wrestles with the neighbor's kids and "doesn't exactly bite but uses her mouth like hands." I say, wow, she's a little big for that.:kiss::kiss: She says, oh, she doesn't actually bite, just uses her teeth. Now I've been watching this dog and she seems perfectly fine, a little rambunctious, but she is a not small black dog and this person thinks it's fine she uses her teeth on children. Sigh.

We're about to leave and my friend (4th adult in this group) asks me if we're doing any therapy visits this week so I tell her yes and when. And hipster mom says, "Oh I really want my dog to become a therapy dog." She asks me what's involved. I tell her "perfect obedience and a fantastic personality." Smile.

It was all I could do to walk away without saying yeah, letting her mouth kids at 18 months old and laugh it off because "she's mouthy" is a really great way to prep her to do therapy work....

I do really like my animals far more than I like people. Most of the time. :)

Good reminder to me why I no longer go to the dog park. Interesting that I live on the other side of the continent and yet those people exist here as well. My vet has a sign on wall that says, "The more I get to know people the more I like my dog." Looks like we are not the only ones.

We don't like dog parks either, for some reason Turner always gets attacked by GSD's when we go so for their safety we don't take them to dog parks because we have seen WAY too many dog fights and irresponsible owners there.

I feel your pain. Kayak and I are avid dog park goers (at least 5 times a week). Thanksfully there is a fairly nice dog park near my house that is small and off the beaten path. There are a core group of us that go regularly and our dogs are very familiar with each other and the owners for the most part are awesome.....
However, on the weekends we get a lot of crazy people. Some people just dont have a clue and bring 10 week old puppies, huge bags of treats to pass out or their dog's favorite toy. It drives me crazy. The other day a young couple came with a 6 month old golden retriever. The dog was limping soo bad and I approached the couple and asked about it. Their response was "oh, we didn't realize he was limping". I almost took the dog along with Kayak and left. The poor thing looked like it had a horrible case of hip dysplasia. I persuaded them to go to the vet ASAP.
Most days.. it's just kayak, myself and a couple other cool dogs. It sure is an interesting place to meet people though. :banghead:

I wish we could teach Thor to be less mouthy; however, he tends to know who he can act that way with and who he can not.

:LMAO::LMAO: This happens all the time! And they are so confident and proud that they know what she is! ....and then they say this! LOL

Our park is nice, really nice, 10+ acres, mix of woods, grass, and several beaches to the river. And we have a regular weekday morning crew of good dogs and responsible owners. But every once in a while a total dip shows up...lol.

Hmmmmmmmmmmm.....................Now I think I know what I'm doing wrong when People ask me questions about my or their dogs. I guess I shouldn't start each sentance with:

"Well if you weren't such a blithering Idiot........."

"Sees Cooper, asks if he's a Newfoundlander (sigh) I say yes. "

In Newfoundland, Newfoundlanders are people! and the dogs are Newfoundland Dogs!
