Does your newf ride in a Prius or compact car?

Hello NN,

We are taking a 5 hour trip up to New Hampshire with Kasper at the end of the month. The AC is broken in our Honda Element (it has almost 200,000 miles and we are not getting the AC fixed).

I took Kasper to dog class the other day in our Prius and he did great! He can sit and lay down in the back seat. I am just worried that he will get crampy on a road trip. Will will stop every hour for him to stretch. Do you think this is a bad idea?

Thanks!

I think it should be fine. My girl travels very comfortably in my Nissan Versa, and she'll mostly sleep in the back cargo area with the seats folded down for the longer trips and wakes no worse for the wear! But obviously, I'm betting she's happier when we travel in the Santa Fe (SUV) :)

I used to travel with Ebony in a '98 Neon. I think as long as there is A/C and they can get up and turn around, they will be fine. Can't be much different than traveling in a crate, IMO.

Gitche rides in the backseat of my Subaru Legacy equipped with a travel hammock. She was just fine on our move from Wisconsin to Colorado which was about 14 hours over two days.

I've actually seen 2 newfs in the back of a Prius. They were not huge newfs but looked pretty comfie in the back of the car.

Malcolm and River share the backseat of my Toyota Matrix. I should take a picture when it is fully loaded with camping gear and the dogs...everything only goes in one certain way!

Wash and Zoey fit in the back of my wifes Honda Fit. Havent gone much over a couple hours but I dont think it would be too big of a issue as long as we stopped for potty breaks and leg stretching.

Ada rides in the back seat of the explorer with my younger son in his car seat. I'm not sure how much longer it will last, but she likes to put her muzzle on his lap and get nose scritches.

We have a Subaru Impreza Outback. It's a pretty small car. Check out my avatar to see how the hatchback trunk fits Bucephalus :) We're taking him to Yellowstone in the Subaru in a couple weeks - it's about an 8 hour drive. He's done all right on a couple 2-3 hour drives into the mountains. You should be just fine with a couple stretching stops.

As stated before, as long as there is room to turn-around and you have AC, and of course the most important potty break! You should be fine. Don't forget "Plain Bruger with cheese only". when you order.

I once took my first Newf in a Daewoo Lanos. It was a loaner car and I had to take him to the groomers. He could NOT get in back, so he had to ride in the front passenger seat, which was WAY too small for a full grown male Newf.

I am glad that I got him to the groomer without wrecking.

I shuttle my dogs in a Versa and don't have any trouble. They seem quite comfy.

ETA: One at a time though, not comfy room for multiples.

I have a Toyota Avalon with just enough room for Sam to lay down...with a few inches to spare. He has room to turn around, stand and sit up, too. I just took him on a weekend trip where he was pretty much in the car all day the first day: 10 AM to 11 PM, and 10 Am to 7 PM the second day...of course with potty breaks/walks during that time. It didn't seem to bother him much...and I assume he prefers to be with us than not. He was a hit with some folks waiting to get on the ferry. :D

Avlon loves my Mini Cooper Clubman and fits just fine. She takes up the entire back with the seats down but, loves that she can see out the windows laying down. She prefers the Mini over the wifes Toyota Rav 4, which was supposed to be the "dog car".

We have a Hyundai Accent and we stuff the space between the back and front seats with dog beds when we travel. That way they have a lot more space to lie down. It works really well and gives them enough room to move around and change positions. However, we don't drive for more than 2.5 hours.

A great way we have found to beat the heat if the AC isn't enough for the boys is a soft serve ice cream cone.

Brinkley travels back and forth to Florida at least every other weekend , 4.5 to 5 hr drive one way , sharing the front seat of his dads Ford F150 truck. they stop at least twice for fresh water and stretching. Usually at Macdonalds of course for Brinkleys dollar double cheez burger!
