Do Other Dogs Go For Your Newfie

Higgy

Hagrid as you would expect is a large dog, he is gentle
never growls or barks at other dogs, but is constantly
meeting dogs who go for him.

They bark, growl, show their teeth and some even jump
up and try to bite him around the neck area. He just backs off.

I always put him on the lead if I see another dog approaching, as some
people are wary of large breed dogs.

Just the other day a little Terrier who was not on a lead (Hagrid was)
went for his neck and throat area. I wanted to give the little so and so
a gentle nudge with my foot but thought better of it.

Do any other Forum members experience the same ?

Yes, usually have had that problem with smaller, terrier type dogs, but sometimes a large dog too. Is Hagrid neutered? Maneen was not and I would have to keep him away from other males at times. He was easy to control, but other males would sometimes challenge him. He usually backed away from confrontations of any sort. He was a big baby.

Yes Hagrid has had the chop (Bless him) and like yours he is a big soft
baby and always backs off.

All the freaking time. But don't blame the little so-and-so, blame the mouth-breathing idiot who didn't socialize their little dog properly, don't have the little dog on lead, and don't monitor and correct the little dog's bad behavior.

The dog is just being a poorly-trained dog. Blame the owners.

Yes, dogs go for Sully as well. Multiple times on walkies someone would open their front door, or have their dog loose on their property and they just charge across the street growling snapping and even going for his neck. Sully is a huge baby and backs away terrified, or stands there looking at the other dog in shock, the poor thing. He's never growled or shown teeth to anyone or anything, EVER. The last time this happened it was a Doberman that charged him, but Sully just stood there unsure of what was going on and the Doberman went bouncing off of him and onto the ground, he tried going for Sully's neck. The owners of these dogs are lucky that Sully has no mean bone in his body because if he did there would definitely be a bad confrontation. He is not yet neutered so I figure this contributes to it, and will see if anything changes once he gets the snip in a few more months.

I have that issue with all of my dogs, but especially Lola.
If I walk the doxies, medium and big dogs will charge them.
The "therapy" Newf in town will chase them down the street dragging it's owner/trainer.
If I walk the Newfs it seems it is mostly medium sized dogs that go after them.
Usually in the 30-40 pound range. Once in awhile with will get a little dog growling at them, but not often.
When I walk Lola...so many dogs snarl at her. Lola is so sweet and loves everyone, but she is high energy so I wonder if this is why more mess with her. It doesn't matter is they are 2 pounds or 200 pounds. About half the dogs we come in contact with when we walk Lola behave in a way I would not let me dogs behave. Anything from just posturing to all out snarling at her.
We were at Petsmart and met this huge St Bernard. Lola could have walked under him he was so tall. The owners explained what a sweet gentle giant he is...well when he met Lola, he sniffed her, lunged, growled and was just not very nice. Granted he didn't try toooo hard because he could have easily dragged his owners and didn't, but it was still very concerning and we left the area.
Poor Lola :(

Around here ppl keep their dogs in fenced yards. Have not had dogs come up to Orka much. Different story in dog parks. More and more though ppl are seeing Orka and saying, "Your dog is too big." This is when he's doing nothing but standing next to me! Very strange. Even when next to a horse I never thought, "Your horse is too big."

Yes some dogs feel they have to yip yap and jump on him but he just sits down or walks away. A couple dogs at dog parks have attacked him and bitten. One is a GSD that we avoid at all costs and another is a hyper mix that Orka avoids. Orka DID fight back when that dog bit him a 2nd time. Now when he sees that dog he runs over to me and sits on my foot, and that dog Rocco is smart not to come near Orka because Orka will quite vigorously defend himself and win.

Last night we bought a 1-month membership at Fido's Indoor Dog Park because it is raining so much everything is literally swamp flooded, impossible to even go for a walk, and he needs doggie playtime.

I am seriously considering getting a male Newf pup as Orka's playmate because it is getting so difficult to find any dog that plays as he wants (wrestling, boxing, somersaulting, tug, Newfie play). He LOVES playing and seems to need it. He is a big baby and just wants love. Very gentle and likes full body contact. Intuitive and very careful with puppies and elderly dogs. Can be a locomotive bulldozer with a big strong young dog who wants to play.

The good thing is that Orka has met so many dogs that he is able to ignore dogs if necessary. He is no longer frantic to investigate and demand play from every dog. And the kittens have satisfied his cat lust.

It totally agree. Our Yorkie is that way because she wasn't socialized. When we got Indy we immediately started obedience classes to be able to control her and to socialize her. She is never the one acting up unless she wants to play. :)

Yup, just remember that the puppy won't be able to REALLY bear wrestle until it is well over a year old...

All the freaking time. And most of the owners find it amusing. It annoys me to no end, because if my dog was the one doing the lunging and snarling, it'd be a totally different story. When they start giggling I tell them they won't laugh when my dog eats theirs, because I refuse to let her get attacked without defending herself. They usually ( ok always ) give me a dirty look and continue on.

I've always said I didn't like little dogs, but I've come to find out it's the owners I don't like. Disclaimer: ****The BAD owners who don't train them properly**** :)

Wash

We've had problems mostly with small dogs going after Wash. I will say however that we are pretty fortunate as we live near a dog park that is frequented by many "regulars" who we see almost daily. Most of the regulars there have fantastic dogs many of whom love Wash to death and the ones that dont at least just stay away from him.

All of the time. If we see a small dog, we actually try to change our course to avoid them. Several seem to have the big dog syndrome.

It always amazes me how the little dogs have the Napoleon Complex. My little dogs think they are big dogs and my big dogs think they are little dogs.

Jorge's mum

I have to say most people grab their dogs and put them on a lead now when they see Jorge, just because he is big, I have had medium sized dogs wanting to get Jorge when he was growing up but since he has grown most back away from him, touch wood he has never been in a fight.
Stanley has had a couple of the smaller dogs shih tzu type terrier type try to get him, but thankfully he doesn't take them seriously as he lives with Rory my shih tzu and seems to adore small dogs, even in puppy training he would always try to play with the smaller ones! He has also had collie dogs and a couple of black labs appear to want to kill him ...thankfully they were on lead..Stanley did bark back at them but we had Rory with us at the time and I think he felt he needed to protect him! I am kind of glad he realises not all dogs want to be his buddy though.
Whilst walking him a couple of months ago we were almost attacked by a swan...now that was scary!! stanley did growl back at it whist we both ran for our lives!!lol

Carla,
I also have the most problems with medium size dogs, not so much the little ones.
Now the Swan...YUP that is scary. We have Swans, Geese, Ducks etc... trying to walk around our yard all the time. They swim by and just come right up. While it's pretty to have them swim by, I don't want them in the yard. I used to let Kitty out if any of them ventured into our yard because she will bark and chase them off, but would never hurt them if she caught them. One time a Canada Goose stopped and had a stand off with her than started to chase Kitty. I had to run out and chase the goose off. Those big birds (especially Swans) can be nasty. Now that we have 8 dogs we almost never get "visitors" in the yard, but they do swim 10' from the shore

I've got a Bird Banger that I use on the enormous flock of Canada Geese that crap all over our lawn. Nanook could care less, but every time I use it poor Pooka hides on the second floor for a half hour.

If there is any one breed that does not like Snuffles it is Boston Terriers. If there is any one breed Snuffles doesn't like, it seems to be Boxers. Most small dogs do seem to have a comfort level with Snuffles. Some bark a lot till the real close contact zone., but I think it says, "Lets visit".

Hehe, we won't even mention my friends' and there friends' "Pesky Little Varmints"...better known as Basset Hounds. But then that is a true love/hate relationship. :)

Tug

Dogs go after Tug all the time. He's Mr. Calm, cool and collected and tries to ignore them. But... If they won't back off and wanna start somethin'; Tug invariably ENDS it  The other day a chocolate lab was going after a young Boxer and Tug was playing "Ref". It was nothing till the Lab went after Tug's face. Next thing the Lab's on his back and Tug has him by the throat. No bite, no damage to the Lab, but Tug got his point across :D

unfortunately we get that reaction though I tend to avoid dog packs as Jessie gets too hyper and reacts to other dogs so we avoid like the plague.

When we get the answer " oh my dog was attacked by a large dog and thats why he's aggressive" now gets the reply "well he's been attacked by lots of small dogs, is he barking or attacking yours"

normally gets them to control their dogs
