Do Newfs get fleas?

Oh, and sometimes...the fact that a product has not been "approved" for a use does not mean that it doesn't WORK in that application, only that the Gov. of Canada has not given it the rubber stamp yet. It's often helpful to check and see what vets in other countries where the parasite is more common are using. I think lungworm is more common in the UK than it is here.

Thanks everyone for listing to my vent.... I get so frustrated with all this...

I had a long talk with the Sr. vet tech at my vet's office yesterday. She's been there for 40 years and I've always trusted her. I asked her about Sentinel, in particular. Sentinel is being prescribed for the french heart worm, lungworm, intestinal worms, and fleas. It hasn't gone through the testing in north america for that particular heart worm because there's nothing in it for the Company; however, the same drug is being used, and is approved for use in Europe for the french heart worm. She also told me that the french heart worm has been found - in pockets of Texas. The Veterinary college on PEI did tests and they indicate that Sentinel/Interceptor is effective on the french heart worm. Also, we have the lungworm here and it is common.

She is going to call the company and ask them for their recommendations for Thule, given her beef allergy, sometime mid-May, when I'd usually start the drug. So, we'll see.

I also told her about wanting so see a different vet.. they have a new vet in the practice, as well as traditional medicine, he has a degree in holistic medicine and I'm going to see him next time. We'll see how that goes.

They do get fleas, but I also do not use any of the "poisons"......We have tried to stay herbal by planting a lot of flea deterrent plant. And we swim a lot. But I think if you are in a flea prone area you will have to use something.
I also see a holistic vet.........He is a chiro/acupuncturist too, great with the dogs. my other vet is a long time friend and ortho vet

Yes....Sentinel is milbemycine :)

In almost 30 years with Newfs...I have had two bouts with fleas here...and had to do treatments. They were not difficult to get rid of, so I don't treat unless I have a problem. TICKS, however...are much more common here, and if I start to find them on the dogs, I WILL treat.

Further scariness- years ago there was a poster in our vets office about heartworm becomine zoonotic. Another reason to make sure your dogs are on preventive.

I have had Newfs for 33 years. Only once did my Newf get fleas - when I was in the hospital having my son 31 years ago. We had to stay a week because my son was early. My brother was taking my Newf for daily walks in a big park with lots of dogs. When I came home from the hospital the 2nd of January, new baby in arms, my first question was "Why is Thor scratching?" - he'd never done that before. So John and my brother ended up shampooing Thor in the garage in the middle of winter with flea shampoo! The fleas went away and we've never seen one since! I don't use any prophylaxis for Tiika, but I do test for heartworm twice a year, even though there are no cases here other than in dogs that were rescues from Katrina.
