My 7 1/2 yr old Lacy is on DES from her previous vet. (Too long of a drive for me) I called previous vet the other day to see if I could get the script transfered to my current vet.

My current vet clinic (not an actual vet but I think it was a tech or receptionist) called me later in the day and said they do not carry DES. She said that someone else would be calling me later in the day and I could get it through mail order.

For whatever reason, gettting mail order meds seems odd to me. I asked my vet clinic if they carry something similar to DES that I could switch Lacy to. The reply, "If it's not broke, don't fix it".

So, I guess my question is, does anyone have an oppionion on DES? Should I get it mail order since my vet does not carry it? Or is there something else out there I should be looking at for Lacy?

Thanks Much!

I kind of look at it this way. Hopefully your vet has teamed up with a reputable mail order dealer. If the vet does not carry the drug, could mean they have little use, so the drug date expires. I small vet clinic would never have the volume of sales on the many drugs available. With mail order, you hope the volume is good, so you do only get the freshest of batches.

I kind of agree with the tech, if the drug you are using works well, then stay with it.

Is this a human med that you coujd get at a regular pharmacy possibly? My vet quit carrying Sentinel and I bought it at another vet in the area. For my next refill I will probably order online. If Lacy is doing well on this med, I would probably stick with it.

DES has to be compounded. Yes, I would definitely keep her on this if it works. It may simply be a matter of the vet writing a script for you. If you have a local compound pharmacist in the area, they may be able to make it up for you rather than having to order it and pay shipping. Here we have a local pharmacy that compounds it for our vet to keep on hand. I've had a few meds for my dogs compounded that way rather than ordering them.

Any formulating pharmacy can compound DES for you, if your Vet will write the prescription. Most Vets already have a working relationship with local formulating pharmacy's in their area and that might something you can recommend to them, other than getting it online. Either way, its much cheaper than other options for the same thing.

I've used a compounding pharmacy for years: Martin Avenue Pharmacy in Naperville, Illinois. They do ship. I had Chelsea's potassium bromide done there. My vet at the time called and talked to the owner/pharmacist to check them out. I get my bio-identical hormones there now for myself.

THANKS ALL!

I called the place back... yep... It's a compounding pharmacy. My vet already had the script in. I don't have to mail order, it's here just south of my work and I can stop on my way home to pick it up.

I was skeptical at first of having to get meds 'mail ordered' cause my own vet doesn't cary them. Makes sense to me now!
