Crate size for puppy

Hi all,
I'm a bit confused about crates. Should I buy one that the puppy will grow into, and get a divider of some kind...or is it better to buy a small one now and a big one later?
There's so many sizes and the measurements are all in inches, I don't know which one to get!

Get a size your dog will grow into. Imagine him/her as a 150lbs Newf and buy the appropriate sized crate to fit an adult Newf. Most crates that large come with dividers. To start off, you want to only allow enough space for your pup to stand, get up and turn around. You can position the divider according to his growth. Once they are housebroken and crate trained you can remove the divider. I have two 42" crates and one 54". I wish I started with the great dane sized crate from the beginning. Would've saved me lots of $ and my big boy loves to lounge in it now.

Before we brought Elvis home we went to the pet supply store and bought the largest crate they had. It worked just fine until he was almost two, but then he outgrew it and we ordered a great dane crate. When we were watching my parent's lab puppy for a few weeks we used his old crate and just blocked half of it off. We had lost the divider by that point, but we used a combination of milk crates, storage tubs, and 2x4's to create a barrier.

*Before we ordered the great dane crate, we used painter's tape and marked off the size. It's a huge crate - Elvis is a Big Boy but he can stand, sit, turn around, and totally stretch out in it. The crate is the only thing in our dining room! I know I have pictures of both crates somewhere. I'll try to post them today so you can see what it looks like.

The only caution I have is that if you use a divider you will need to secure it properly. There was a tragedy not so long ago regarding a crate with a improperly installed divider with a puppy. I agree I to would buy a crate and divide it, but I would not used the provided wire divider. I would make a divider out of plywood or some such material that can be fastened to the crate to stay in place.

Agreed. I remember that poor puppy :( Honestly, I wouldn't even use a divider, but would still get a good sized crate. I know of plenty of people that did that and had no issues with crate soiling. I use the size down from the Great Dane crate...I believe it's 48x33x30.

alright...where did you folks order the great dane crates from? Sulley fits the size down fine, but Rio is very long...I know he'd be more comfortable in the very large one.

I'll look around. I know I got it from some website (not Amazon) - it had free shipping so it saved me about $100!!

I had the 48x30x33 for Max and the Great Dane size for Charlie. Max was fine with his but Charlie was slightly taller than Max and would blast out of his crate to investigate whatever caught his attention. The 48" crate would hit his back and he ended up with a badly bruised spine. I kept both hoping the 48" will fit in my van and the GD one for the house.

hmm....maybe it will end up being an ex pen....Rio needs the side door, he has neck issue and doesn't turn tightly like a normal dog, so he needs the side door.

I bought a massive crate online before getting Scarlett. I have a divider for the crate but have actually never used it because when I got Scarlett she was almost fully potty trained and I preferred to give her the extra room to stretch out and play in. I was given a smaller crate from a friend and after attempting to put her in the small crate once and hearing her howl and cry I never did that again. She does not like her crate and never did, but was much more willing to get into the massive one. I would not waste money on a smaller once because your dog will grow so fast and will prefer having extra room.

This is the crate I bought Nala. It comes with a divider. She's 14 weeks right now and I have the divider set in the middle. This givers her enough room to lay down flat, stand up, and turn around. I will probably take the divider out soon, as she has not had any accidents in the crate over the last couple weeks, and feel she might appreciate the extra space.

Just to give an update on this... I took the divider out of Nala's crate on Thursday of last week. She still hasn't had any accidents in it, and actually seems to enjoy being in her crate much more now that she has more room to move and spread out. Her crate is right next to my bed, and with the divider at night sometimes she would wake me up when she moved because she would bump into the sides of the crate. Without the divider she doesn't hit the sides, and I have noticed I have been sleeping better since removing it :).
