Cosequin DS or...alternatives?

I have always given Cosequin DS capsules - 2/day to Cooper and 4/day to Zuzu, as per vet's recommendation that Zu always be on the higher dosage.

It is expensive and we go through A LOT of bottles.

Does anyone give a human gluc/chond supplement that seems to work well? Thoughts?

Thanks!
Mary

Maggie has been getting the human version since we got her. I can't remember the brand (and we're out right now) but I'll look and send it to you. It's a generic brand in a dark green/clear bottle with a yellow label - I get them at target or walmart.

I just put them in her dish and she eats them with her food. However, she will only eat the capsules (coating with stuff inside)- not the pressed powder ones. It was challenging to find one that has the right dose without other stuff in them.

I use human glucosamine / chondroitin that is usually on sale at most drug stores. Microlactin or Duralactin is inexpensive from Swanson or Vitacost.

I use Cosequin for Millie but I used to use the liquid form for my Lab. They say that works best because it absorbs quick... It was cheaper too. May be worth looking into :)

My vet said to only use Cosequin DS for dogs. She said the canine has more restrictions as to ingredients and quality of than the human form. A lot more confidence as to what you're actually getting, than in the human form. Anyone else heard of this?

Nope. We always used the human form. Is your Vet selling you the dog stuff? If so....she's/he's making a profit on it. Probably a much bigger one than say, Amazon would make.

I got my first bottle of Gycoflex III from the Vet. Then for the subsequent one (I only used two bottles worth...prefer the powder I linked above), I went to Amazon. Amazon was just about half price. I buy NOTHING at the Vet unless I need it that very second. Even prescription meds. If I DO need it right then I'll get enough to last me a day or two and ask for an Rx for the others. A lot of meds have a human equivalent. Cephalexin is cephalexin, period. Same thing with Pred, Amoxi, Doxy, etc. And it's a fraction of the cost at places like WalMart. However, there are some meds, like Augmentin (human name)/Clavamox (dog version) is about the same price no matter where you get it. You just have to check around before purchasing from the Vet.

Yes, you're cutting their profits, and if you really love your Vet and have ONE or maybe TWO dogs...then you might be willing to eat the difference. But when I can get 60 capsules of Cephalexin for $10 versus $50...I'll go with the cheaper price.

More restrictions and quality for the dog form than the human form? And yet we can't Frontline ourselves (LOL)? I think your vet may be feeding you a line.

I get the Cosequin DS at Amazon, or Costco when they have a coupon, so much cheaper than the vet, but still not cheap with 2 Newfs, one of whom is always on the "ramp up" dose...

I just told the vets this month that I could not pay $90 per month for Metacam anymore...just can't. So they gave me a human prescription, I bought a pill splitter, and now our Meloxicam (human) costs about $30 for a 6 week supply.

I don't get the cosequin from my vet, I've been getting it from PetsMart. She's not making any profit off of this. I guess it's just her opinion. I have 3 Newfs, so it's not cheap! Thanks for the info.

Never heard that! Either your vet is misinformed or you heard him wrong. If your vet is correct, then maybe I will start taking canine supplements!

I used Cosamin DS on Roger until I found Microlactin. He did fantastic on that alone. He did so well that I started taking it myself and can say it is excellent. It's also inexpensive.

I've been using the human version of Cosequin, which is Cosamin DS for years for my dogs. Costco and Sam's normal price is about $58 for a bottle of 230 capsules. It goes on sale quite often for $48.

I also give Microlactin too. It does really help.

I have used Cosequin with MSM, the equine powder, for years. Much more cost effective for a multiple dog household. They get 1/2 tsp./day. Make sure that what you are buying is glucosamine hydrocloride (HCL) rather than sulphate, which is not as bio-available. Can't quote a study but was discussed at length on Newf-List a number of years ago.
