Corn Cob

Sue Lynn, take him into the vet. It's too late to induce vomiting now. Barium xrays would help. Pats to the silly boy!!

I'm not "trying" to make him vomit now.

What he is eating now is passing through......and he's not throwing up his food at all. Just a little liquid. I found some on a rug yesterday and actually thought it was from the cat, but then later he ran to the door and thew up on the rug there before I could get there to let him out....same liquid. The vomiting has me worried.

I will see if I can get him xrayed either tomorrow or Thurs afternoon.

Dang it!

I had barium xrays done on a foster basenji who ate half a corn cob - they could see it was in big chunks and just kept an eye on it - it came out like 6 weeks later - he never did have a problem in that time though. So sorry!

I made an appointment for tomorrow afternoon for the vet to look at him.

Oh, Ginny, apparently you are supposed to follow the peroxide with tepid water.......maybe that would have made him vomit the other night. ?????

I've never followed up with water and I've never had them not throw up. I usually start with 10cc of hydrogen peroxide, wait about 15 min., if nothing, I'll give another 10. I've only ever had to give 2 doses. Vet said to continue giving it until they do. As you know, fresh h p is needed.

Turner, pass the rest of that thing fast. Your mama is worried.

Oh wow, somehow I missed this. I am pretty sure you shouldn't make a dog vomit that has eaten large chunks of anything because of the damage those chunks can do on the way back up (bruising from the force, thrust, and getting stuck crosswise in a windpipe, etc). Unfortunately, I am very experienced at making dogs vomit. It took a lot of HP to make Murphy vomit and I never followed with water. I did walk him around on lead with a big plastic garbage bag in the other hand.

My girlfriend's Doberman was vomiting liquid/water for a few days. She took him to the Vet, they x-rayed and discovered he had swallowed a golf ball. He ate ok, never vomited his food at all. I guess Turner could have chewed the corn AND swallowed chunks, too. Glad you are taking him in, it will make YOU feel better.

Big hugs to Turner!

Just spoke with a Long Island Newf Mom and her boy swallowed a 4 inch corn cob yesterday. X-ray showed it whole. She's headed to the surgeon this morning.

Well, he might have thrown up if I'd kept giving it to him, but when the ER vet said not to make him vomit, I stopped.

I pray we see nothing on Xray.....

My boy Winston stole a 4 inch corn cob (frozen ears) from the dinner table last night...swollowed it whole...i know because I tried to grab it from him and heard him gulp it. We immediately gave him hydrogen peroxide and he did throw up several times but no cob. We took him for x rays last night and clear as bell we saw the whole cob. The doctor said in one breath we could wait to see if he passes it but then changed her mind and had an estimate in her hand for surgery and was only interested in us signing it...my husband and I looked at each other and said we are bringing him home. Long story short at 4am he started throwing up (not much coming up) and seemed really stressed...he's at our regular now...they filled his stomach with air and found the corn cob still whole in his stomach. They are going to induce vomitting again and if he cant get it back up (i know alot of people are thinking it is too big and can do damage) i have complete faith that he is in good hands! if he can't get it up they are going in to get it surgically. The risk of obstuction is too great because he didnt chew it at all!

I hope your boy Turner at least chewed his and enjoyed it first!

Oh my, Leigh. I hope Winston will be okay. Best of thoughts for your boy. Makes me not want to bring corn cobs in the house anymore. So scary.

Leigh posted on FB earlier that Winston was going in for surgery. I'm hoping for an update soon.

He's out of surgery!!! They've got the cob with the corn still on it...no damage to the stomach or intestines and as an added bonus thanks to Meg's suggestion they did gastroplexy.

My house also is now COB FREE. If it weren't for this thread wouldn't have seen the danger. Also will be on super lookout on walks in parks near picnic tables.

Good luck to all the cobbled Newfs! If mine ever needs surgery of any kind I'm going to have his stomach tacked. Terrified of bloat. Would be so worth it.

I guess that's the up side of having a corn sensitivity - I will never (I hope!) have to worry about Ada grabbing a cob and downing it.

Hope all the fur babies are feeling better soon.

Well xray was inconclusive. Will hold all food until tomorrow and take him back for another xray. Something is in there and it has been over 12 hrs since he ate. If his stomach is still distended they will sedate him and run the camera down to look. Didn't see any obstructions though.
