I have 2 newf. 1 is 9 healthy still playful and never had a health problem. The second is 6 had hip surgery at 1 1/2 but besides that has been healthy and energetic all of her life except for about a month ago. She has been losing weight but she always stayed on the thinner size. She is normally 115 pounds. I feed full bowl, so rarely do I pay much attention to how much food is left. They both have a tendency to leave the food and nibble. I noticed about a month ago she (the 6 year old) just wasn't acting right. I put her on the table to brush her out and noticed just how much weight she had lost. Both dogs have the run of my yard so once again I only notice the poop while I am cleaning up. Some were soft some were normal some were a combination. So I started to give them both a small bowl of pumpkin and rice nightly. Then the 6 year old wouldn't eat the pumpkin that she usually loves. Then I noticed she wasn't eating her food. I took her into the vet and they did a ultra sound, and a blood work up. The ultra sound looks good except there is some water type solution near the gall bladder. The doctor said not enough to be a problem but it shouldn't be there. Her blood work shows a slight increase in liver enzymes and her bilirubin is slightly abnormal, and she is also slightly anemic. She will not eat for me, she will take a bite or two and that is it, she is drinking some water but not as much as she usually would. So far the doctors have no idea what it can be. Tomorrow we go for x-rays to see if she has any growths that did not show up in the ultra sound.'
I am terrified..... any suggestions of what to ask the doctor, or how to make her eat, or any suggestions would be appreciated.....prayers help too!

I would question the fluid near the gall bladder.????? Ascites from liver disease and if you don't get any answers soon, then to ask for a second opinion because of the weight loss and anorexia.
Sending many good thoughts and prayers, so scary.

They have checked it and have no idea where it is coming from. Doc tells me with tomorrows x rays if they see cancer in her lungs that can be where the water came from. Her heart and lungs sound good. They want me to do an exploratory if they can't find anything but she seems too weak to me to go through that.

Prayers that you find some answers, I think some make satin balls to put weight back on pups. Bone broth could also be helpful. Keeping you guys in my thoughts.

Results in from the x rays no cancer. Now they want to do a blood work up that they specialize on the liver. Fast for 12 hours take blood force feed her and 2 hours later take blood again. This will tell us if her liver is working or if she is in liver failure. This is a bad new and bad news situation. If she is in liver failure, no treatment. If her liver is working properly then no idea what it is and either more test or hit and miss treatments I guess. I can't afford more test.

Try satin balls for food or you can liquidise food and syringe feed for a bit .
There are various credit things you can use to help pay for treatment though other people will be able to advise more as not sure what is available in your area.

Talk to your vet as they may be able to advise as well.

Ascites is not a good sign, sorry :(.... it usually means cancer, pancreatic, liver, ovarian omentum or any part of the digestive system and sometimes even lung. though that usually shows as pleural fluid....Your dogs needs a ultrasound with a good operator. Ascites can be drained, but will most likely return. Some fluid could be sent to pathology and checked for cells. But I know from where I work, Radiology Department, that ascites rarely has a good outcome... prayer from Us...

Okay here goes. NO CANCER but she is in liver failure and they do not know why. They want to do a liver biopsy on her, but that is not going to cure her why put her though the pain. Yes it does hurt, I have had it done to myself. Right now she is still on antibiotics, and prednisone. I also have started her on milk thistle and tissue salts. She is slightly eating, drinking some water. I have some SAM e ordered and should be here tomorrow. I am going to look on the holistic forum next and see if anyone else has used tissue salts to help regenerate the liver. Thank you for all of your prayers please continue any positive vibes I truly believe help.

OK , so liver failure can be caused by being on some drugs.... is your pup on permanent drugs.... How do they know it is not cancer as only biopsies will tell you that completly.

I sound a bit harsh, I do not mean to be, but from my medical back ground I do know how things are diagnosed.

If it is due to some reason like medication it would help if they were stopped.

Milk thistle is good.... have you maybe thought of trying to get hold of Kymethy (?Spelling) on the holistic newfoundland page on FB, she is amazing with natural stuff...

As i said before some medications, like metacam for example and otheres too can cause liver failure. So can some plants and Blue green Algae is another. I know this, becuase we have always been worried about Blue green algae when we water train.

I would not say no to a Biopsy, i much rather know what i am dealing with. But I would want to have a good Vet, who is good with ultrasound. Make sure all the coagulation profiles are good before the biopsy. When done under ultrasound with some sedation and local anaestetic it should not be too painful.

Take care.....

No meds before this. Just heart worm during the season. she has had 2 ultra sounds I believe one was called a deep tissue? Both showed no damage to the liver, spleen, or kidneys.
