Cherry Eye-NJ reccomendations

I hoped never to have to post anything in this section... :(

Orca has cherry eye. It has gone away and recurred several times but hasn't gone away in his left eye and keeps coming back in his right. In addition, there seemed to be green discharge coming from both eyes when he woke up yesterday. I've talked to our breeder and she is talking to her vet and I've done internet research and know we might be looking at surgery. It sucks because his complementary insurance with AKC lapsed on the 18th and the "permanent" cherry eye occurred about a week later- We never got around to signing up with Healthy Paws.

I understand about the "pocket" technique of tacking it in, and we'll be taking him to the vet as soon as we hear back from our breeder about her recommendations, but for those of you in the NJ area, do you have any recommendations of practices that perform this procedure well, have lots of experience with it, or even eye specialists offices? The internet is getting me nowhere, even though Ian and I have spent several late night searching, trading info, and trying to find better options that removal and tacking.

Orca will be 23 weeks tomorrow. He's just a baby. He doesn't seem to notice, but I am really freaking out that something terrible will happen to his vision, or he won't wake up from anesthesia or he'll end up having to have the surgery over and over. I just need some reassurance here. :(

Poor Orca :(
I had one puppy with Cherry Eye, Dudley, he was about 5 months and the regular vet operated and tacked it back in. Never had any more trouble with it.

Deep Breathe....and release....

It's not an uncommon occurance. I think that you can go with either a very experienced regular vet or you can find a specialist. Not sure about any of the special ER vets down there but here we have 3 specialty vets. Red Bank and Garden State & North Star...they are good, but expensive. I think Gloria, just did the surgery recently with one of her pups...Driver??? Maybe she can chime in with some advise.

It is not that big a deal, even if nothing is done. Your vet should be able to do the surgery or will be able to recommend a specialist in your area.

UPDATE:

On Monday, we saw a different vet than than we normally see, who diagnosed Orca with conjunctivitis and told us he could just remove the gland for a small fee or we could wait until Orca gets neutered next year and have an ophthalmologist tuck it for an exorbitant fee. Talked to my breeder and her vet who both strongly disagree with the advice he gave and the price he quoted me (honestly, not surprising because I questioned his competence the entire appointment). Orca will be traveling to New York sometime in the next month to be seen and to schedule the surgery. The one good this is that after 2 days with the eye drops for his conjunctivitis, Orca's eyes look much much better.
