This beautiful boy is coming to stay with me. I am really excited! He will be my first Newfie, but I have plenty of experience with giant breeds (I've owned a Berner and lived with a Tibetan Mastiff). My only real concern is how he will do in the oppressive Atlanta summer heat.

Congratulations! Enjoy him! No experience here with Newfs in the heat...I live in Seattle! But others on here have said they do just fine. :)

I'm also glad that he found a good home with you. As long as you have a cool, air conditioned house and are prepared to a/ take him swimming and b/ schedule the walks/activities for early mornings and late nights, it shouldn't be a problem. One of our puppies is living in Atlanta, and yes, it's hot, but they work around it and seem to be doing well :). You can also do a search on this forum using the terms "hot weather" "summer activities" and "keeping cool" and you'll find quite a few threads with lots of good advice & tips (eg feeding frozen foods during the summer etc).

YAY! I live further south than you...I'm in South Alabama along the Gulf Coast!

We have a Bronze Landseer girl and a Black boy...they're really great at holding the floor down and taking walks at night when it's cooler outside :)

Congrats!!!!!

Air conditioning and kiddie pools. Sounds like a plan! Thanks for the warm welcome, and all the great information. I can't wait for him to arrive.

Congrats! He's gorgeous and he'll adjust just fine to the heat...there are plenty of Newf Netters in the southern and southwestern states! Congrats again! Hopefully we'll get to see some of his pictures posted here in the future :shuffle:

Congratulations! Keep us posted on how he's doing. We need lots of pictures!

Oh...and get some floor fans (big, round from Wal Mart...they tilt...and are $30). That helps keep them cool even in the AC. :)

Congrats! My first 2 newfs came through SENC, and we lived in Charleston, SC. I found that they did fine in the heat. They did not grow the undercoat. They were both adults, and were happy inside during the day. They went out in the morning when it was cool, and then later in the day, but not for very long when it was hot out. If you did not want to be out, neither did they! When I took them places, I always left the car running with the a/c on, and made sure I had an extra set of keys. They were very happy fellas.

Now, you need to get involved in SENC, Southeast Newf Club. They have all sorts of fun things they do with other newfs owners.

Good luck!
