Does anyone have any experience with tumors in breast tissue?

I have a sweet rescue 10 year old with two masses, on the fourth and fifth nipple. Mastectomy on Wednesday planned but only of the two affected nipples.

I am wondering if I should request either a needle biopsy prior to determine how aggressively we should operate (we could do a radical mastectomy if it is malignant.

At the very least, should I request his taking out the lymph nodes and a third nipple that is on the same drainage path?

I don't want to put her thru multiple surgeries if it can be avoided.

ANY experience or advice appreciated.

We have a dog who hangs around the office. I took her to the vet to be spayed and he removed her swollen cancerous breast at the same time. That was 2 years ago and she is still the office outdoor dog, and healthy.

I know nothing about canine breast cancer. I work for people cancer doctors, though.

I hope you can do the least invasive procedure and get the most out of it, of course. We are all here for you.

You should follow the recommendations of your vet, but breast tumors/cancer is not as aggressive as it is in women. It usually is localized and the removal of the tumor is all that is necessary. Good luck to your girl.

Exactly Lynn..comparisons to human don't work in dogs :)
I had a girl that had tiny tumors removed..twice..once at four years of age (while pregnant...we used a local) and again a year later. I had her spayed at 10, and she lived to be 13. Sometimes they will xray to check for mets to the lungs if the tumor is very large.
Vets always try to make sure they get complete margins when they remove the tumors ..and at ten, you don't want the surgery to be any more invasive than it has to be.

Our Great Pyrenees, Crystal, had a mammary tumor at age 10. Initially the vet was not optimistic because as a rescue she had not been spayed until she was 7 and we'd been told that the later they are spayed the more likely a malignancy will be. So, I asked him "if this was your dog what would you do?" He said he'd remove it, and that's the way we went. In the end, turns out it was not malignant as he had anticipated and she lived to be 13 yrs old. Even though she was a senior girl at the time of the surgery, she came through it very well and healed very quickly.

Our English Mastiff Max had a couple breast tumors at age 8, and were removed while she was spayed. Both benign. She lived until 10. We probably would not have noticed ourselves, but she had pyometra and the vet found the tumors then. She did well with the surgery.

My chocolate lab had several malignant breast tumors when she was 8. The surgery was pretty invasive as she had an incision from her throat down to her groin. She recovered beautifully and lived to be 14 years old. Sending lots of positive healing thoughts for your girl.

These are all such positive experiences... Thank you ... I am going to speak to my vet today before surgery.

More later ... Thank you ... I am really feeling quite emotional but these posts made me feel so much better.

A quick update ... Surgery was completed about an hour ago. Basically it went very well. The vet did a mastectomy and a lumpectomy and nothing else for now as he strongly feels it is simply a mixed benign tumor. He will send it off to pathology of course.

In the end I was much cheered by all of your advice, stories and prayers. I have lurked here and learned here for many a day .. It is a fabulous online community.

I will report once I know the results of the lab tests.

They say she is resting comfortably and will let me pick the old gal up tomorrow
... She had a horrible neglected life at the beginning and has really been
Enjoying a great retirement in our home. I'm beginning to feel she will have more years to fill with joy.

So happy to hear that she came through well. Just like 2Paws, we had a Golden with several malignant breast tumors that were removed when she was 8. She also lived to be 14 without recurrence of the tumors!

Keeping fingers crossed that all will be just fine.
