Boog to become balless...advice sought.

Boog has an appointment to be neutered on Thursday. It's time, as he has started trying to hump the puppy (5 month old GSD) in a dominance thing. He never challenged the existing adult males, aged 4 and 8, but has a problem with the puppy. We are hoping this will stop him from trying to be a homosexual child rapist behind our backs. (We stop him from bugging the pup when we are around).

As we are historically GSD people, and I just read the post on ACE, is there anything Newf-specific we should know? Boog is a rescue...and a GSD/Newf mix, but he seems to take much more after the Newf side than the GSD side. With mixes, you never know, but we don't want to take any chances.

Is there any other medications we should avoid with him? Or anything Newf-specific we should know in general?

How old is Boog again? I've read it's not so good to neuter the large breed dogs till a year or year & a half.

I would consider this more of a Dominance issue.........Some females will even do it to other females and often fixed dogs will continue doing it. Getting fixed might not solve that problem. you can correct it however and show your displeasure by telling them "off" or "enough"...........I do not like to ignore it and any of our dogs past and present have been taught not to do it. Tessa has tried it with both Annabelle and now with Katy. She knows it is not allowed. I have even put her in "out time" for a few minutes in the bathroom when she has not listened. She now has stopped, at least when we are present. I would correct it, like I said before we don't allow it. some people find it funny and laugh and that encourages the dogs. :) Ronnie

A lot of the male dogs at doggy day care do it, and they're all neutered. We tell them no and pull them off of the other dog, and if they continue they're put in time out. I think it's a dominance thing also. I had even caught my Sydney (female/spayed) trying to hump Chance (male/neutered).

Sulley likes to try this with 'new' dogs, big or small, young or old. If Jake or I don't catch it and correct it, generally, the 'new' dogs does, which suits me just fine...they are more effective at it I think....he runs for the hills. He's gotten much better in the last three weeks or so...I'm not sure if that is because we are establishing that Jake and I are 'top dogs', or if it is because we have met most of the dogs that hit the park the same time we do.

Hera is definitely Jake's superior and shows it by trying to hump him. As soon as I see her though she slinks away trying to act like she wasn't doing anything wrong. She knows better, but tries to get away with it when she thinks I'm not looking. She was just spayed last week and she already back to trying to hump him.

So the neutering may not stop the behavior. Great. We do correct him every time we see him, but with the kids in and out and us with jobs, we aren't around every minute of the day to correct him.

He needs to be neutered anyway, and he is certainly old enough at 2 and a half.

If Nanook could type, he'd tell you, Bojie humps him every chance he gets. Bojie is neutered, and so is Nanook. It's a dominance thing. Your GSD will get annoyed enough at him one day, and correct him.

As for things to know re: neutering, I'm going to try to drum up some old posts on here that can help...I know there are a bunch. If you do a search, it can help you. Your vet will give you the best information on what to expect etc. One of my biggest problems were finding a ecollar/cone large enough so that he wouldn't lick the wound. I would suggest fitting him one as early as you can, so that you have it before you need it. And ways to ease the swelling/pain post surgery.

You may find the humping even for dominance will go away as he is there longer, and integrated into the pack fully. Ricky used to hump Oreo (because she would put up with it), now it has gone away entirely since he lost his bowling balls.

Definitely dominance...Gracie does it to Maneen when she thinks he's going to do something FIRST...like get out the door or into the car. We don't allow it either, but she's persistent, so we take steps to keep them separate when those situations arise. He may or may not stop after neutering. Good luck.
