Best Newfy and Family Vehicle?

Hi All!! Well, we have a new addition to the family (of the human kind) and it's got us thinking about the ideal vehicle to have a couple of Newfies and a couple of kids in. We were looking for something we could take to places like the beach and to the river with the whole crew... and possibly not have to spend 4 million dollars in gas.

Any suggestions?

:)

We like the Dodge Caravan best - especially with the fold down seats into a flat floor in the back. We're waiting for our 2003 to die so we can get a newer one!

I would think a mini van would be best. A mid-size SUV might work too. I have only 1 newf and no kids yet, but have thought about this for the future. We have a Jetta wagon right now which would still be ok for 1 kid and 1 newf, but no more than that!

Our vehicle has been in our family so long that we affectionately call her "Olive", she's like family. We have a 2001 Chevy Venture extended version. Both my dogs get in with ease. When I am taking them for a ride I fold up the a couple of the middle row seats. I would love stow and go seating, but how can I part with my 11 year old van who has been with us since her first year? We make do. A minivan seems to have a lower floor than some SUV's, and that's been the key for my dogs to feel comfortable about getting in. They like to see what they are getting into.

I have a Honda Element. Love the room in the back and also the ability to remove both back seats or secure them up (as in vertically) to the inside of the vehicle.

My vote goes for a mini van, Honda element is cool, my friend has 1, has the rear seats out for the newfs, it is rubber, easy cleaning & alot of room.

If I had an infant again with 2 Newfs I'd get a minivan; as it is my young one was 5 when we got our first dog so we have a Pilot. When my DD is in the car she rides on one side of the back seat in the booster and I can either give her the whole bench row to herself or fold half of it down to let the dogs spread out with her. I do need the dog ramp for the height of the bumper. So the lower height, sliding doors and configurable space would send me to the minivan if we started over.

I like Volvo V70 station wagons. The non turbo ones get 30mpg PLUS on the highway; I know from personal experience. PLUS, my LAST one make it 255,000 miles.

We have a Hyundai Sante Fe and you could easily fit 2 adults, 2-3 children, a Newf and still have some room in the cargo area for other stuff, like a diaper bag and a stroller along with the Newf. Plus, if you get a roof rack you can use it to bring along luggage or throw up a couple of kayaks or whatever. Out of all the SUVS and minivans out there, we chose it over the others because it's an IIHS Top Safety Pick. Safety is more important to me than anything.

In the future though, I would LOOOOOVE to get a Ford Flex. Quality craftsmanship, safe and room for boatloads of kids, dogs and all the necessaries!

I can vouch for the Flex!! I LOVE mine!! This may go down as one of my favorite vehicles I've ever owned. Only downside is I was hoping it would fit a crate or two but sadly it does not. I have a Ford Transit to haul dogs around. That will fit two crates nicely. I was torn between getting a larger Van or the Transit. Part of me still wishes I had splurged on a big dog Van but with the Flex and Transit, I can go here, there, everywhere and beyond on very little gas:beer:

We have a Toyota Rav4 and while it's not exactly huge, I can fit two carseats (although that doesn't leave much room for anyone else in the back seat), and two newfs could comfortably sit in the cargo area, maybe lie down but I haven't actually tried that (I've had one Gilly and two labs (which is about the same as three large labs) be able to lie down), plus there's an under-floor cargo area for some packing. And I don't know if this is standard to lots of SUVs, but there's an outlet in the cargo where we have a fan plugged in. It's not fancy, but it was in our price range and we love it!

We've been looking at cars lately. We have three kids + Suki. I used to think we had to have a big suv for three kids, but depending on your carseat needs, you don't. We have 1 in a booster (he is 9 and I don't think he'll ever reach 80 lbs to get out of it!) and 1 in a 5 point harness (she is 6 and still not the 40 lbs required for a booster). I was able to get their carseats in a Chevy equinox (a small suv that seats 5). And that get 34 mpg on the highway. We also looked at a ford escape (that comes in a hybrid that get very good mileage), but I didn't really like the way that drove. My father worked for GM for 40 years, so I am limited to American cars ... I am frustrated there are not more choices with better mileage already. Good luck with your search!

I drive a Hummer, basic seating position is me driving, wife passanger seat. Wash in one half of the back seat (folded out), River in the car seat in the other half of the back seat. Zoey in the rear gate area. Problem with the Hummer though is that its a pain to get in and out of, sits up too high.

My wife just bought a Dodge Grand Caravan last week to replace her Honda Fit. It pretty much makes me cringe just looking at it.... But the seats do fold flat and there is a ton of room for the dogs and kid back there.

I have a Buick Enclave (LOVE it!) and without putting any seats down in the rear, I can fit both Newfies in the rear (could fit a third Newf if I wanted to....). I also love that it has A/C vents in the ceiling all the way to the rear of the SUV. The Enclave (and the similar Chevy Traverse and GMC Acadia) are so roomy.
