Best Insurance

I am considering purchasing a Newfy puppy. I have read a lot about the breed and at this point they seem to be the ideal breed for my family. But before I bring that not so small fur ball home to my kids I want to know it will be for the long run.

I know Newfies are expensive, but I am trying to do my best to put a number to that. From everything I have read so far health costs are the biggest expense. I wouldn't have any problem dealing with routine vet expenses (a few hundred to a thousand or so), but big expenses like surgeries that are several thousand dollar would be quite a strain. I believe the bast way to deal with this would be pet health insurance. But it is my understanding that what they cover, how you get paid/reimbursed, etc. varies quite a bit. I have also heard that some are a lot easer to work with then others.

So I am hoping some of you can share your experience and recommendations with me.

If you can handle the routine vet expenses and then some, I would start a savings account and put the premium you would pay into it until you have several thousand dollars. That way you have money set aside for the big expenses, if they happen. Also if your family has a financial crisis you would have access to the money and not have given it to an insurance company.

Just my opinion.

Great advice. I keep a zero balance, high limit credit card just for the dogs now, but saving is the way to go, I think. There wasn't such a thing as pet insurance years ago, and this is exactly what smart people did. And it works if you're diligent. If not, try a credit card and only pay for what you need.

But if you do go for insurance, be very certain that you understand what it will and will not cover. You'll probably still need that savings account or card to cover some expenses.

I have had good luck with Embrace. Vet expenses can be very high with all the technology vets use now. You do have to lay out the $, but reimbursement comes in about 2 weeks.

Here is a really good link that compares pet insurance companies. Not to say that the highest rated company is best for everyone, but it's nice to see a general comparison. https://www.consumersadvocate.org/p...subid=google&gclid=CNj7w9mWrNECFcWFswodH1EBjQ
I have had Healthy Paws for the past 15months and I love it. I submitt claims right on their app and get a reimbursement check in 7-14 days. Here some things I like about them and a couple things I do not:

-They have no lifetime caps on payouts, so if for some reason you end up with a dog that needs a lot of care, you don't have to worry about reaching a limit.

-They are a non-profit company.

-The annual increases are pretty low

-They have really good customer service

Things I don't like:

- They have a 1 year wait on hip coverage

-They have a 15 day waiting period from the time you sign up. It your pup encounters an issue within the 15 days it's not covered and then considered a pre-exsisting condition. -I wanted to surround Ella in bubble wrap for the first 15 days, but thankfully nothing happened and now she is fully covered.
