benefits to registering with AKC?

We have the form that we got from the breeder the day we picked Hemi up. But we never sent it in. I was just curious if there are any benefits to registering him with the AKC finally? Thanks :)

Snuffles never was registered either, and the best I can tell, only one in his litter was. Not even sure if I could have done it when I got him at 2. I sure never saw much reason since he isn't shown, bred, or anything special except to me. So he is fully registered to me!

It depends on whether or not you may want to "do" something with him later...like Obedience, Rally, Water Work, Agility, etc.

And don't be surprised if you do want to do something fun with him. It's an addiction once you start. At the very least, you should get his CGC.

We're going to get an AKC PAL register for Bo, with the hopes of doing water work...it might be years before he's ready, so it might be years before we register, but someday we'll get there. :D

I know you've been working really hard to train Hemi into the perfect gentleman - whether you want to make that training 'official' with AKC titles would be the only real reason that I can think of to send in the paperwork. He's a gentleman, regardless.

I have seen AKC registration papers come in useful in several situations- divorce, dog turned in at a shelter and more than one person claims ownership, proper placement following a death in the family. In all of these situation the AKC papers were used to prove ownership by a specific person in the family.

You can also use them when you get you CGC (canine good citizen) which can get you a discount on home owners insurance, the ability to be off leash in on-leash parks and other "perks" depending on where you live.

In Australia you can not enter any comps with out paperwork, such as tracking, Obedience, agility and so forth.....Non pedigree dogs like Tessa can get an Associate registration. We have the ANKC her, same kinda rules.

We need to send in Thor's papers still. I've got his name picked out and everything! We only had to add her name in the front sooo..he will be Hidden Aker's Thor's Hammer (hehe)

ok, you've convinced me! ;) Thanks guys!
Good for you!
Here in Canada all purebred dogs are registered by the breeder, which actually saves a big hassle with new owners, the breeder pays the registration.

So, when he is registered he can at least get his CGC, right?? :)

In order to do an NCA Event such as trying for a water or draft title they need to be registered. CGC is definately something to pursue, Hemi will be a better and more fun Newf for you. You'll bond more doing training.

A dog doesn't need to be AKC registered to test for the CGC. Mixed breeds and unregistered dogs are welcome. If you want to go on to other AKC events, then you'd need to register him.

I would think your breeder would appreciate you registering him for record keeping purposes.

I received an email yesterday, saying that since all my pups were registered with AKC, that they were sending me a free tote bag! So register your pups in case your breeder needs a tote bag! :allg069:

But when people ask me why they should register their pup, I tell them that they paid for a pup with "papers", so why not follow through with it.
