Bad hip day...

I came home at lunchtime today and Eloise was limping pretty badly, I don't know what she did, she was fine yesterday. She's been doing so well with the dysplasia, that you'd never even know she has it, but today I was definitely reminded again. It breaks my heart to see her hurting like this. When I got home tonight it seems even worse. She's sort of planted herself on the floor and doesn't want to move.

She had been walking a lot, twice a day for about a mile, and swimming a lot, but with the heat the way it's been she's only gotten a shorter walk in the morning before it's too brutal out, and she hasn't been swimming since Saturday. So that might be why it's so bad today. I hope that is what it is.

I'm going to go plant myself next to her. I feel so bad. :(

I do feel for you. I try to balance fun with Snuffles elbow problems. Most days it doesn't seem to bother him. But I know when I see Snuffles limp, I feel so helpless.

Hope it is short lived!

ohhhhh....Amy...I am so sorry. I hate to think of Eloise in pain. Hope she feels better soon. Maybe the heat is just making it worst.

I'm so sorry to hear that. Maybe what Jennifer said could be true. I know Roger gets stiff. He had alot of activity this past weekend and Monday he was stiff. When it happens, I get him up every couple of hours and we walk up and down the block off leash so he can move at his desired pace. It helps alot.
I also feel the heat makes a difference.

Awww....poor girl. I also hope she's feeling better tomorrow.

Is it possible that laying on the hard (cold) floor is causing the problem, somewhat?

I know that our Sasha (old Golden) is very stiff and sore when she lays on the floor (it's tile). She usually doesn't, but at night, she will for a while, and can barely get up. When she sleeps on a bed, sofa, etc, she can bounce right up and down, no problem. So the floor is definitely NOT her friend.

Before I go to bed, I go in and make her get up and go over to a Kuranda bed (which is still cool because it's mesh and has nice airflow - but isn't hard) or "her" loveseat to get her off the floor. She's happy to do it....and I always find her still there in the mornings.

Do you think she'd lay on a Canine Cooler bed? It would be cool...and not hard. Or a mesh Kuranda bed? In the winter, you can put a fluffy bathroom throw rug on it. Ours love that!

Both of my older horses have had a terrible week! I wonder too if it's the heat as they do so much better in the winter. A great dog bed is a crib mattress. It is the perfect size, waterproof, you can buy ready made sheets and covers to fit it, and my older dogs have always loved having one. They are only about $30 too.

Thanks for the tips. It's hard to keep her on a bed at all, she prefers the hard floors. I try to get her on her bed that is a therapeutic memory foam and she'll lay out in for a while, but then gets up and plops on the hard floor, even in winter. Maybe eventually she'll learn that she's better off on the bed.

She was a little better this morning, still limping but at least not crying out. It's cooler today too, so maybe the heat is somehow related. Maybe I should move to Alaska! lol

Amy so sorry she had a bad day yesterday....it really could be the lack of activity due to how hot it is. As far as keeping her off the hard floors....good luck...when Murph had his shoulders operated on we were supposed to keep him off of them for 4 months....the only soft surface he will lay on is snow

You're such a good newf mom and she may just have some bad days scattered among the good ones no matter what you do. Sometimes things just don't feel good ya know. Hope she gets more comfortable in the next few days and this heat wave breaks soon so all our pups can start getting outside more.

Thanks Katie!

I took her for a short walk at lunchtime just to get her moving and she still a little gimpy but the walk seemed to help a little. The heat wave has broken a little today or at least the humidity, so hopefully she'll improve!

It's so true Pam. Because I know how much pain it would take for her to even pay attention, it has to be a lot. So often I'll accidentally step on her tail, or step on her hair that then gets pulled out in a clump when she gets up, and she won't even look back to see what happened. Or she'll swing her big head around and not judge accurately the room she has so it will crash into some furniture or something and it doesn't even stop her momentum!

So for her to actually cry out, it's got to just be unbearable.

Hi amyk, have you tried giving the dog cosequin? This really works well for hip and joint problems. I had Chance on for it two weeks before his ACL surgery and he was walking on his leg before and after surgery. It is a bit expensive and at first they have to be loaded up on it for a few weeks then you taper it off for maintaing. You may want to search different sites for cost comparison.
