Noticed a week ago Molly was a a little sensitive if I touched her back, while she is on her feet not really any pressure just a touch. No limping, or soreness to her bones. No whining just would kind of drop her back when you touched. Still eating, pooing and peeing. After a few days of it not getting better and maybe a little worse took her to the vet. They did blood and X-rays, blood was fine nothing to worry about they said. X Ray showed a small bone spur but nothing that should be bothering her. She's 8 by the way. Arthurtis he seemed to think was very minimal as well. So nothing was really found, sent us home with antibiotics, pain meds and some for inflammation. So after 4 days on meds she isn't any better, in fact I think worse. She now whines kind of grunts to lay down and stand up. After being on her feet and she sits you can see on her right side the muscles are twitching. And she really thinks about laying down. Once down she seems comfortable but isn't really interested in getting up but when prompted will. She's still eating and drinking. She walks but with her tail tucked up. She does wag her tail when people come over or when we first get home. I'm calling the vet tommorow to see what else we might be dealing with but I thought I'd also ask here in case this seems familiar to someone. Any ideas are appreciated.

Jake had the same thing but xrays revealed he had spondylosis of the spine. He has been on meloxicam and pain meds since and is doing well...I hope you can get it worked out. Maybe needs more pain meds for a while. Let us know...

I know it sounds kinda stupid, but have you checked for any hot spots? And I will also mention about doing a urinalysis and/or culture. My girl recently had us to the e-vet for a pretty bad bladder infection. She gave no indication about any uti but I did mention a few months back on FB about a groan/grunt on her lay downs. She's always had a hard get up but it did seem a little worse. Now that I think back, I had a few different signs that should have triggered a call to the vet. She also leaked once or twice and my thought was she had some pain getting up in the morning. My reason in saying this is you know something is up, keep on it! Keep us posted!!!

Ditto on the canine chiropractor...they often find misalignments missed by general vets.

Took her back in Monday AM, did more blood work to rule out lyme disease and others. Blood work was negative for those. Vet changed out the pain meds and gave her a shot to help with pain and inflamation. I picked her back up after lunch and already she's feeling better. She pooed in the yard! yay! At this time Vet thinks its just back pain/strain. Won't rule out spondylisis, in the xray there are bone spurs where she is sensitve to touch however, he doesn't think they are signifigant enough to be causing the problems. We'll have to go to a specialist if we want to pursue it more. I'm waiting for the info on that. I guess I'd like to have a full picture and know what we are up against and treat it accordingly rather than just throw pain meds at her. I'm going to check around for a canine chiroprator too. But for now she is 100% better within 24 hours of the new meds. Hopefully that will allow her to relax and rest and get healed up. You all know our newfs are more than just a dog, they are family! Thanks for the thoughts and support! Here she is recovering with her favorite stuffed cat:

Check if there is a VOM dog Therapist in your area, it is manipulation done with hand tools, I did it to Belle and after one treatment she was 100% better

sorry its been awhile since an update, been very busy trying to help our Molly. Well things were going well and then that weekend she had a bout of gas in her GI probally from the medicines. This really scared us so we went to the specialist. They kept her for a week trying different meds and she'd have good days and bad days. Sent her home on presidone and rymidal. He didn't think it was a back issue and really thought it was idiopathic hypertesia. Sorry if my spelling is bad. Or an autoimune diease targeting her back muscle. He thought we could maintain her on those meds. Once home she was ok but just not herself. Still sensitve to touch and complaining some getting up and down. So I contacted our old vet who has moved out of town to take a look. She didn't like the combinaton of meds and high dosage. So we switched to Tramadol and Presisdone and working to get her off the presidone. We did a blood test which test for muscle enzymes to check if the other vet was right or not and those results came back that her muscle enzymes were good. Others were good, liver, ect. After x-rays she really thinks its a pinched nerve in her neck as there is a spot that looks questionable. We did urine and found a bladder infection so we are treating that as well. We then went to a dog chiroprator and have had 2 sessions with them, chiropractor and acupunture. He said she was pretty bound up in her back, she was pretty sore saturday as he expected, monday she had a pain attack at the vet where her heart races and she pants excessivly. We've had a couple of these at home too. We got her calm and he did some acupunture injections that work well on horses and good success in dogs. Well its been a rollercoaster of good days and bad and she's has a real hard time laying down and getting up. Once she's laying down she is much more comfortable after the injections. However, she just lays there out of it. We haven't had a pain attack since so thats good. However if she gets to laying on her side she just can't seem to get her legs underneath her to get up and if we help she screams when we touch her. Once up she does good but seems weak. She'll walk around for about 30 min doing her business. Yesterday she refused to eat, we started on a probiotic, and pepcid and she's now eating rice, chicken, cottage cheese. Again we think the meds are giving her stomach upset. We've been fighting diarhia for a couple weeks. I've heard the chiro adjustments take a few times to see results and she might get worse before better but i'm just not sure how much we are helping her. They xrayed her hips and he said they are pretty worn out and she is over compenstating and its taking its toll on her back. I'm worried for sure, she was a little better today and i'm hoping for more improvements as we do more treatments.

Chase has major problems with her neck. She gets very stiff, hard to get up or down and she screams a lot. She cannot straighten or turn her head to one side. She cannot get comfortable. Here is what I give her to help. tramadol, gabapentin and muscle relaxers. If it is really bad I add Previcox. Sounds like a lot of meds but they help. Especially the gabapentin and muscle relaxers. The gabepentin in a pain medication that stops nerve pain. Also I have my vet to a red light heat therapy. Amazing how much that helps. My vet let me use it on my hip and within a few treatments my hip was great. I am a runner so not having hip pain is great!

I know ldn is used for dogs too. It might be a treatment worth looking into. I hope your puppy feels better soon.

After Friday's chiro treatment she's doing better, still not great but for sure better. She just seems weak in the hind legs which we think might be lack of eating due to the meds. She's on Tremadol and Gabapentin. We are weaning her off of presidino. For the week we were dosing her high and now that she is comfortable on the floor we are backing her off the last few days and now are just 2 times a day, hopefully that will bring back the appetite. We have let her rest plenty so maybe she's just not that hungry? She has ate some and is drinking plenty. The not eating like herself is probably what scares me most! But we are alittle better and we will take it. Next treatment is Wednesday.

The Tramadol is a narcotic pain reliever and can sometimes cause loss of appetite. Chase has adapted to it and it no longer has that effect on her.

Glad to hear the chiropractic treatments are working.

We let Molly go last monday night. She took a turn for the worse Sunday night and Monday. She quit eating and could barely stand. When we tried to help her up she would just scream when we touched her. She was telling us she was ready. In the end the Vet was certain it was a tumor in her spinal cord pushing the cord and making her painful and restricting her movements. I can't believe it. But we were not able to fix her or take her pain away, we tried.

I'm sorry. I am going to lock this post. Many times people don't read through the whole thread and will post suggestions. I know how that can be hard after you've lost Molly. My prayers are with you.
