and the news is not good. I just got off the phone with the vet and he says that the aspirate results show lymphoma. There was an abnormal amount and appearance to the cells aspirated and the conclusion is lymphoma.
Their protocol is to do two weeks of 3 times a day antibiotics on the off chance that it could be a systemic infection, so they will start today. He says this is very unlikely based on his symptoms. If this were a systemic infection that had spread to the point of involving all of his lymph nodes, he told me that he would expect him to be sick, vomiting, not eating and be febrile. He is none of the above. Thankfully, other than just being lazier than usual (which should say a lot as he is KING of the couch potatoes !!) he is still eating and drinking normally, and the things that make him happy are still doing the trick. He still comes running when you shake the ice cube tray, he still stands beside me and helps me prepare everyone's dinner and still jumps when I call his name and comes wagging that big fluffy tail.
If there is any response to the antibiotics at all that they can see, then they will do another biopsy at the end of that time period, either an open lymph node biopsy or another aspirate, but he told me not to get my hopes up for that, as the pathology and symptoms again point very, very heavily to lymphoma. The next step he said would be steroids to help him be comfortable while I make some decisions from there.
His wife, who actually saw Rogan and did the aspirate, is out of the office right now. He is going to have her call me later, as he was not aware of whether she spoke further to the pathologist or not, so I will wait for her call either later today or in the morning.
They just faxed me a copy of the pathology.
CYTOLOGICAL INTERPRETATION: Lymphoma.
COMMENTS: The high degree of observed lymphocytic immaturity far exceeds that expected with lymphoid hyperplasia, and observations are characteristic of lymphoma.
He has definitely lost the sight in his right eye and I asked if there could be a correlation. The doctor said that lymphoma travels very quickly and there is a possibility this could be cancer in his optic nerves or thereabout.
It is truly such a sad, sad day. I said before, I don't have the opportunity to come here so much lately, but your kind words of encouragement are such a treasure to me you can't imagine. No one else could understand the way you all do. I'm a single mom, and I just lost my own mom to cancer this past January. I know it is true that God never lets us carry more than we can bear, so I must be a lot stronger than I ever imagined !! I just love him so, so much.
