ARRRGHH- Hot Spot

Brody the Newf

We noticed a hot spot on Brody's shoulder Friday night. I've been using antiseptic spray and Goldbond powder. It will look like it's getting better but then Brody will violently start scratching at it.

He is in pain and I feel awful. Is there anything else I could be doing because right now he's looking like a neglected dog.

Shannon is the first dog I've ever had to deal with hot spots with. I just shave the area, use Gentamicn spray, and I have to keep a NO BITE collar on her, when I can't watch her, because she will keep at it. I also just started giving her an allergy med until the pollen season is done.

Usually with my guys, the goldbond takes care of it within a few days. If it's still oozing and my boy is itching it after 4 or 5 days....I take him to the vet for an antibiotic because it's gone staph at that point. Not to say that's what's up with Brody...just that it's what happens with my guys.

I don't think a collar would make a difference. He can't bite at the spot anyway but he can reach it with his back nails.

Honestly, I can't even imagine how I'd shave him. I have scratches all up my arm from trying to make him sit. At this point, I think he thinks that *I'm the one that is causing him pain. He'll scratch and run up to me all submissive acting. You know Brody, the dog does not have a submissive bone in his body!

He was coughing a lot last week. Do you think it is related?

Feel your pain. Obie & I went to the vet this morning. He's had three small crusty/oozy patches in the past week. Two on his -head- of all places. (not like he can reach them to chew or even scratch effectively!) We have been treating pretty successfully with an antiseptic flush and then Neo-Predef powder. ( neomycin sulfate, isoflupredone acetate and tetracaine hcl) I just wanted the vet to see them so we could get to the bottom of what's causing them. Still not certain but the Vet thinks it is probably staph and possibly just a "stage" he's going through as his coat changes. So.. I came home today with a medicated shampoo and Obie is now a clean fluffy boy. Hope it helps. If not we'll be going back in for antibiotics.

All that being said, maybe you could check with your vet for the neo-predef... it has healed Obie's pretty well in a matter of days.

If you can't shave him, then take him to the vet. It clears up much quicker when the area is shaved. He needs something to make it stop bothering him, so he won't scratch it. Ask your vet.

Completely agree, if you can't shave him...the vet can.
Lola's hotspot was so tender I couldn't even move the fur to look at it. The vet sedated her. He used something he said was very safe and very quickly and easily reversed to sedate her. He had her 45 minutes. When I got her back, she was shaved, clean, awake and ready to start healing.

Tula had an infected abcess on her back. After medical treatment, I put a man's sleeveless t-shirt on her and tied it. That way she couldn't do much damage while scratching it with her back paws.

Could you try trimming the hair very carefully with tiny scissors, like sewing scissors? We had Moe's first spot shaved, but he got a few tiny ones later and I just used little scissors to give the area some air.
Our vet gave us something called Hexadene or Chlorhexadene wash. I just doused the spots with it a few times a day and they cleared up very well.

I've never used it on a hot spot, but the K9 liquid health ear solutions bottle says you can use it on hot spots too. It's basically the blue power genetian violet recipe already made up.

Hope he feels better soon!

OK I refused to pay a vet bill on something I should be able to handle. Last night, armed with scissors and determination I went at him. Curt was holding Brody's collar and telling him what a good boy he was as Brody was bucking and scratching. I got upset with him and asked him why on Earth he was praising Brody for being a beast? I told Brody to knock it off, got the scissors and started cutting away the fur. Brody whined like I was killing him but that was it.

I was able to cut around the hot spot and guess what? This morning it was GONE! Yay!

Woo hoo, Brody! Maybe it was the tangled or hardened fur that was causing the pain and irritation?? Funny how these big guys can be such drama queens sometime. Glad he's feeling better.

..I found the greatest stuff for hot spots...It is called Nu-stock,,,,,If you catch it soon enough, I have had it dry up in 24 hours... otherwise takes a few more days. The stuff is great ...and I have used about everything

I have been using Gentian violet recently for any hot spots, which fortunately are infrequent. It really dries up the area.
But wouldn't put it on the white of a Landseer!
