If you're on FaceBook, please follow along on our Newf Friends FaceBook Page as we begin our campaign to educate dog lovers about how to identify Back Yard Breeders. We will be posting daily tips on our FaceBook page, then compiling all of these tips for a complete page on our blog.

If you have ideas of what you would like to see included please let us know! You can send me a PM here, or email us through our website.

Did you know that Back Yard Breeders produced 77% of the Newfs who have come through Newf Friends Rescue to date?

That's right, over 3/4 of the Newfs we've rescued were bred by Back Yard Breeders!

In Ontario, Back Yard Breeders (BYB) are a far bigger threat to the Newfoundland Breed than Puppy Mills.

You would never intentionally buy a puppy from a Puppy Mill, so why would you buy one from a Back Yard Breeder?

Follow Newf Friends in the coming weeks as we offer daily tips to help dog lovers identify BYB and avoid making the mistake of purchasing from one.

Don't be a part of the problem, be a part of the solution -- Stop buying from BYB!

This is a great educational piece as often people do not know they are buying from a BYB. :grrr:

Super idea Sandra !!

Educating potential adopters is the single most effective tool in the arsenal of Rescues and this is an excellent start. Hopefully all rescues on the continent will support and join this effort.

Having statistics like this are most important. This helps us understand that BYB's should be the main target, something I didn't appreciate until I saw the chart.

I was surprised when I put the data together. I think other areas like Quebec would have higher puppy mill numbers, we just don't have a lot of PM in Ontario producing Newfs. Actually, most of the Puppy Mill dogs we have cared for originated from Quebec.

Our reputable breeder numbers were higher than I expected, but I think our numbers were skewed by a multi-dog surrender from a reputable breeder who became ill and really needed our help.

The number of BYB in Ontario seems to increase daily. It is so frustrating. Hopefully we can help people understand the damage these careless breeders are doing to the breed we love.

I should note, the "other" category is for strays we can't clasify. I probably should have labelled it "unknown" not "other", and will make the change when I update the chart in the future.

I posted the data on a FB page followed by animal lovers. The woman who has the page also has a weekly column in our local newspaper devoted to different animal issues and Rescue. Called Kristens Kritters.
