AKC names

I had no problem coming up with an AKC name for our cocker Cooper, but is there some sort of system for coming up with one for our new Newfie pup?

Ours was named by the breeder so that made it real easy. Her AKC name is Bifrost's Sylvanus Windrunner. The grandkids picked world of warcraft names for the litter. Her call name is Crycket. Just pick a name you like if the breeder has no input.

Our breeder uses movie/actor names. We have (kennel) It's a Wonderful Life (Zuzu) and (kennel) High Noon (Cooper).

If your breeder has no suggestion for theme then do what you like. There are many past threads with cute name ideas.

Usually everyone here likes to have input in naming your dog. If you post on the general discussion page with some info on your pup you'll get tons of ideas.

"Your name" 's barrelmaker Cooper perhaps? A cooper makes barrels.

A lot of Kennels require you to use the Kennel Name in the Dogs official AKC Name. We have an I Love Lucy theme for ours. You could use a water theme for a Newf, there are so many goos ideas out there for a name.

Don't ask your 10 year old. Ours was going to be Princess Maggie Mae Moon Pie, but thankfully it had snowed and we had just watched Spirited Away, so she came up with Playful Spirit of the Snow. Thank Goodness.

M's breeder usually has themes for her litters...one litter will have a science theme (Kennel Name's Theory of Relativity), the next could have a Star Trek theme (Kennel Name's The Trouble with Tribbles), the next could have a Saturday Night Live theme (Kennel Name's Deep Thoughts) If your breeder doesn't have themes, the sky is the limit! Have fun with it if you can!

When choosing Emma's AKC name, I tried to put some thought into the breed's history and what it means to me. Everytime I look at pictures of Newfoundlands, I always think of the sea. So, I chose "Kennel's Name" Heart of the Sea. I looked it up on the AKC website to make sure it was available and was so happy when it was. So that's my baby's official name

If the breeder doesn't have a theme, we have our own, given the year. haha

Cole and Frankie are named after singers and their names reflect it.

And yes, if it's an established kennel, they want their name first. If two kennels share a dog...BOTH are in the name.

For example:

Cole is Honeylane's Unforgettable Fairweather

Honeylane is the breeder's kennel, Unforgettable is a song by Nat King Cole (get it??? LOL) and Fairweather is the name of the sire's kennel.

Frankie is Darbydale's My Way

Darbydale is the breeder's kennel, My Way is a Frank Sinatra song. LOL

Those are just the two most recent, so I used them as examples.

I encountered a woman this summer who told me she came across a Newf running free within a gaited community (around 20? years ago). Long story short, in her effort to find its owner she was told it belonged to Lucille Ball's daughter. I did a search, but could never confirm the story, though she seemed genuine.

Saphira is named after the blue dragon in the Eragon series. Her breeder's kennel name is listed first (Aukai) then my kennel name (911). When we bred her, we had two theme names for the puppies, the first keeping with the Eragon books and the second theme was based on our kennel name (911). My husband and I are both firefighters (retired) and our kennel name is not only in honor of all our first responders (alive or passed), but also in memory of all the heroes of 9/11. And while I may have themes, there are always exceptions!

Names can be just about anything - references to books, movies, music, poetry, sports, something near to your heart, comics, etc. - the possibilities are endless. Just keep in mind, there is a character limit (which includes spaces) for AKC.

You are allowed to use kennel names in posts and signatures.

I've always wanted two names. Since I don't get puppies, the odds of picking mine out are fairly slim

Anyhow, I like Kennel Name's Capt'n Morgan O'the Sea, Kennel Name's Miss Maggie Mae, Kennel Name's Lucky Penny, and Kennel Name's Chief Earl of Rastus (Chief Earl is for my Grandpa and Rastus is a lake we fished at a lot, so that's significant in a personal way for me).

My guy's name is Judann's Flying Solo From Sangar. I think all the pups in that litter had to do with flying or relocating in some fashon

Raleigh's breeder wanted KC names which begin with a 'T' for all of her puppies. We really struggled to think of something but in the end we went with 'Tallisbay Travel The Seas' since he lives on an island lol.
