Today is Abbie's ninth birthday, as best we can figure it, so we want to observe the day in properly festive fashion. Most Newfoundland dogs I know consider a gift of food tasteful and appropriate, but will settle for a nice outing in a pinch.
We're faced with a challenge here. Abbie's not doing badly for a dog with artificial ligaments in both knees, but outdoor walks are more a matter of duty than pleasure for her these days. That leaves party foods. (I think I see her tail wagging as I type.)
The challenge is that choices are limited due to a condition called "intestinal lymphangiectasia" which keeps her on a rigorous diet, with lots of supplements and restrictions.
Two of the acceptable "special treats" are ice cream (she prefers "Blue Bunny" brand vanilla) and Kraft Macaroni and Cheese. Choices, choices, choices! Abbie says "Both" but we want to save something special for the blowout bash when she turns sixteen and gets her learner's permit.
(Oh yeah- we can't keep her out of the car as it is. She'll insist on driving as soon as she figures out how to get at the keys.)
So what say you all? Ice cream or mac'n'cheese?
