A special newf farewell to their friend

I had to put my oldest cat down this afternoon due to advanced liver disease. I held him as the vets gave him his freedom. As they were carrying him out (to take him to the crematorium) Sampson and Delilah came around wanting to say goodbye. The vet knelt down with Goliath in her arms and both Sampson and Delilah licked his head and face. It was an amazing thing to watch. My vets were pretty amazed since the normal reaction of dogs is to take a sniff and walk away. They really loved teasing Goliath and especially liked it when Goliath would swat their noses. They will miss him. So will I.

I'm so sorry to hear about your Goliath. It is so hard to say goodbye and your description of Sampson and Delilah was very touching. It's a privilege to be able to give our beloved pets a peaceful ending, but it sure doesn't make it any easier.

Sharon, I'm so sorry to hear about Goliath. It sounds like Sampson and Di gave him a loving goodbye. He's now prancing around the Rainbow Bridge covered in Newf kisses.

Hugs to you and yours.

Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you. Poor old Goliath. It's sweet that your newfies were able to give him a final farewell.

:( I'm so sorry!
I have always felt that when a pet passes, a person should let the other pets know by letting them see the pet that is gone. (when possible) That way they know they are gone and will not continue to look for them.
Sampson and Delilah know their feline family member has gone and were able to kiss him good bye.
Sending prayers for peace of mind and heart!

I'm so sorry to hear about your Goliath, how sweet your dogs are to say their final goodbyes. I'm sure he'll be missed, but he's pain free now, I imagine liver disease is not an easy ordeal.

Thanks all of you for your well wishes. I love the support and love that flows from this group. I feel relieved - he wanted to go - he was in such pain. Although your heart screams at you to do everything and anything you can to fix it - sometimes you have to let it go. I'm glad I made the decision. Sampson and Delilah are two very compassionate dogs. I sense that this is a breed quality. Bailey came up took one sniff and walked away. Delilah at first kept nudging Goliath with her nose as if to say, okay - get up and let's play. Then she figured it out.

Loss is not always a bad thing. It opens up the door to new experiences. There's another kitty or two out there waiting for me to find them. I never would have considered bringing in another cat while Goliath was alive - he was too protective of his space and already resented the growing household.

Thank you again and happy holidays to your two legged and four legged family.

Oh my... I'm so very sorry for your loss. Knowing that Goliath was given such an incredible "send off" makes me think that he was met at the bridge by lots of Newfs, who will look after him and keep him company. That's quite a comforting thought....
